| Notes | Welcome to the next volume in our continuing series of master recordings from dime member "JoeRay". Joe Ray has spent decades documenting historic show after historic show. We are pleased to present a new direct from the master tapes edition of Jefferson Airplane at the Public Hall in Cleveland, Ohio on January 16, 1972. This was the first show of 1972 for the band, a year that would find them imploding and splintering into separate groups by the end of they year. There is one unconfirmed date on January 14th in Ann Arbor, Michigan that probably took place on November 20, 1971. ************ JoeRay fills us in on the details around this recording: I sat in the 4th row center on a Sunday night in Cleveland’s Public Hall to a sold-out crowd of 9,500 with my girlfriend Patty to see one of the icon bands I had always wanted to see. Seeing the Jefferson Airplane was a dream come true. A band I never heard of at that time, REO Speedwagon opened the concert but did not impress me at all. The promoters, Mike and Jules Belkin followed Bill Graham in booking unique and different types of music on the same bill. As I was very close to the stage and in the center of the main floor, I was overwhelmed by stage amps and did not benefit from the house PA so the vocals were a little low in the mix. I recorded this concert with my old Philips cassette recorder (mono). I used a AKG D1000E vocal mic connected to a 20’ cable and a Memorex 120 cassette tape. The AKG mic was responsible for the quality of the recording. ************* Joe Ray is correct regarding the vocals being buried in the mix but don't discount the overall quality of this recording, it is very very good and benefits from the AKG D1000E mic. In this case, like the first volume we shared "Ten Years After", he was probably a little too close to the stage but the AKG does a fine job capturing the instruments with the power that comes with recording from the 4th row. The vocals at times do get lost in the mix, in a couple of places pretty much disappearing all together. Grace's vocals come through fairly well due to the frequency she sings at and all the vocals were pulled forward as much as possible in the mastering process. I've said it before and will say it again, we owe JoeRay a huge debt of gratitude in working through his rare master recordings and I'm honored to be a partner in this historic undertaking. I hope you enjoy his recordings as much as I'm enjoying working on them. We have included JoeRay's ticket stub and the one surviving photo of Grace from the show which has succumbed to some degree to father time but is still very cool to see. Samples and artwork included...released in both 2496 and 1644. mjk5510 and JoeRay |
