| Tech Notes | *Vince666's comments*: This is a so good recording (and a so good transfer), with great dynamics, details and definition, that I thought it really deserved a fully manual cleaning, restarting from scratch from the RAW vinyl LP transfer. The main reason for this choice is that, unfortunately, the automatic cleaning processes, on such a good recording, will result into a partial loss of quality. For example, the dynamic transients are so well defined that, by applying a declicker processor to the whole thing, the processor will make confusion between what is actually a vinyl click and what is a strong dynamic transient of the recording itself and then it will be affecting/reducing lots of such dynamic transients or, at least, the most strong/defined ones like, i.e. , many percussive sounds, any audience handclaps made by people who were very close to the taper, some guitar notes with very strong attack (i.e. the notes Dave makes on the lower strings of his guitar at the beginning of Time) and so on... and this happens also if we tune the declicker in order to be very conservative. The only way to avoid this unwanted side effect is to set the declicker so conservative that it won't even detect the actual vinyl clicks, making it useless at all. In the same way, a decrackler processor applied to the whole thing will go and partially remove all those sounds which can be confused with the actual vinyl crackles or surface noises... a good example are the sounds of the stretching paper into the loop at the start of Money or, also, the "roughness" into certain guitar sounds like, i.e., certain chords played with a strong touch... all things which this recording originally captured just nicely. So, to try to get the recording cleaned from the vinyl noises but by also trying to not affect all of these nice sounds, the only way was to clean it manually, by manually selecting only the segments where there was actually a vinyl noise to remove and applying the cleaning processor only where it was really needed and leaving the rest of the recording untouched. It was a very long work, of course, because I had to select and individually clean/process God only knows how many tiny segments of audio. But I believe the outstanding sound quality of the original recording (included the lovely raw transfer of Neonknight's 1st press LP made with some seriously good gear!) did really deserve all the time and effort I did put into this new cleaned version. I believe this is one of the very best PF audience recordings ever, if not just THE very best. And the careful manual cleaning work can finally provide a cleaned version but with all that lively sound of the raw transfer. Did not actually make a side by side comparison with the previous cleaned version of this same LP rip which is just circulating (even if I am just sure this new manually cleaned version is at least a bit better) but, at the same time, I didn't try to clean it "too much"... meaning that I did prefer to leave some minor vinyl noises untouched rather than trying to clean just everything and, then, risking to also remove some of the "useful" sound. I believe it's better to stay on the conservative side of things, when the recordings are of so nice quality. I did also apply speed correction where needed... the recording starts to slow down from about the last minute of 'Time' and it keeps gradually slowing down up to the cut into 'Us and Them'. All the rest did just run at correct speed. neonknight vinyl LP and transfer / vince666 mastering, January 2021 |
