Notes JEMS is happy to release two recordings of the Stones' July 11, 1975 show at The Forum, Mike Millard's incomplete capture along with this, Ed F's master tapes of the full performance.

Ed recorded all five of the Stones' LA shows in 1975 and got remarkably consistent results. To be sure he wasn't recording with Millard-quality gear, but his tapes capture the atmosphere of the occasion appealingly and offer good, perhaps even very good sound for the era and equipment.

His recorder was an inexpensive portable (believed to be a Panasonic) that Ed recalls ran on six AA batteries, likely giving it long battery life and perhaps even improved performance compared to most cheap decks. He paired the recorder with what he calls a cheap Radio Shack microphone that he would stick to the armrest of his seat with tape. The results have little immediate-vicinity audience noise, relatively up-close sound, and while not as sharp or clear as Millard's efforts, are potent just the same. Ed was also good about his tape flips and didn't miss much of the show.

On July 11, Millard only recorded the first 50 or so minutes of the set. Ed's master tapes cover the entire performance. Better still, we believe Ed's recording of the show is uncirculated, so it should be a new, superior source for the middle night of the run. Samples provided.

There has been historic confusion about the dating of the July 11 and 12 performances, but both Mike and Ed marked this performance as July 11 at the time and it is not the same as the shows released in the official Stones vault series on CD or DVD.

Stones expert LetItBleed finds the July 11 performance vastly superior to the sloppy set captured on video the next night. His notes on the show and the dating controversy can be found in Vol. 117 of the Lost and Found series.

Massive thanks to Ed F for lending us his master tapes. He told us he is fairly confident he hadn't played them since 1975 and they had been sitting in a tape case ever since until he gave them to us last year. Old Memorex cassettes are glued into their cases and most squeak like a mofo on playback today, but their oxide has held up and with careful restoration, good transfers are possible.

LetItBleed provided enormous assistance in comparing Ed's recordings to existing official and unofficial sources, which we greatly appreciate. It has been a pleasure collaborating with him. Professor Goody was of course on hand as well to adjust the pitch. Last but not least, our esteemed colleague mjk5510 handled post-production as he does each and every week.

We hope you enjoy this new recording of the Stones in Los Angeles, July 11, 1975. There's more where this came from.
