1 Robert Crescent is located just south of RJR Radio station in the
crossroads area of Kingston. For much of the eighties, it served the
purpose of being a home for singer Sugar Minott and his family, and the
headquarters for his sound system, Youth Promotion. Promotion grew from
being an neighbourhood sound strung up occassionally to give local youths a
chance on the microphone, to becoming one of the premier sound systems in
Jamaica during the decade. May artists got their "start" on Promotion, such
as Jr. Reid, Yami Bolo, and Tenorsaw. At the controls was a formidable
team: Jah Stitch, a successful DJ in his own right, who in the 70's
scored hits with "Dread Can't Dead" and others with producer Bunny Lee
(check out the great Jah Stitch compilation on Blood & Fire records).
Pleasure,Sugar's brother, was the
operator, and Talouse was the mixer, keeping up to date with the changing
dancehall mix patterns. While other sounds may have had "bigger" equipment,
and more famous DJs Youth Promotion always had the vibes....specials that
no-one could play, and of course whenever Sugar Minott, the king of
dancehall singers took the microphone, it was pure pandemonium.

Back in the 80's my wife and I published a magazine (Reggae Quartely), and
I did a radio show in Toronto called Reggae Showcase. This gave us reason
to travel to Kingston regularly, and we had the good fortune of getting to
know the crew. 1 Robert Crescent became the place to congregate for
interviews, pictures, and just good vibes. This is a cassette that was
given to us by Pleasure during a session at 1 Robert Crescent on the
evening of June 6, 1985. So from Pleasure, for your pleasure, is a taste of
the A-1 sound, Youth Promotion.
