Tech Notes major tape-speed changes have been removed at two points in "Hard to
Handle," at the tape flip in "Dark Star," and during "The Eleven." minor
speed fluctuations remain throughout, and are particularly noticeable just
after the second fix in "Hard to Handle" (just before the final verse) and
immediately after the "Dark Star" flip. these were impossible to fix
dependably due to the extreme out-of-tuneness of the band: all the stringed
instruments are a good eighth-tone off to the keyboards at the very start,
and only get farther out of tune; the electric organ is so out of tune that
the same note in adjacent octaves is out; and if you listen to the bridge of
"St. Stephen," even the freaking glockenspiel is out of tune! the only way i
could fix the major pitch changes was to pick one instrument and keep it in
tune with itself. i'm guessing that they must have been playing after dark,
which in that location would have been pretty cold at night. there is a
major left channel level drop after the cut at 24:38 of "Lovelight," which
is unrecoverable due to the enormous amount of amplified hiss resultant from
the necessary ~500% level boost. a number of pops and such have also been
removed. at any rate, the fixes make the show MUCH more listenable...just
expect the typical Bear-cassette-master warts and such.
