| Tech Notes | Audience Devotional Tree Round 14 - January, 2003 GRATEFUL DEAD Tuesday, June 26, 1973 Seattle Center Arena - Seattle, WA Audience Recording AUDMC > Reel > Reel > DAT > WAV > SHN Recorded by Donn Amick, FOB, Sony EMC mics spread out across the row > TC-152 master cassette > Amick's Reel recorded at 7-1/2ips >Reel(w/ Dolby). A > D by Noah Weiner (noahbw@attbi.com) November, 2002 Reel playback on Pioneer RT-701 > Teac AN-180 Dolby decoder > Fostex D5 DAT (A>D only) > Turtle Beach Montego II Digital I/O >Soundforge (wav edits and track IDs) > SHNTOOL (SBE fix) > MKW (shn) This recording is the same master that is found on current copieslisted as AUD>MR>C>DAT>CD. That genealogy is completely fabricated. Not only was the recording not mastered on reel, but Amick put his master cassette onto reel and all direct copies he made, that we know of (2), came from that. Judging from the drastic difference in sound quality, this other listing is AUDMC>R>?>C>DAT>CD at best. The difference in sound quality is absolutely striking. Also worth mentioning is that Amick "dropped out" many years ago, to Hawaii apparently, and his masters and reels have vanished with him for the time being. notes: At 3:24 into Casey Jones, something is switched on the master tape (bias?) which results in a great improvement of soundquality. Also, Amick edited Drums on his reel. It might also bemissing from the master, as there are no copies to be found (now) with more of the Drums from his recording. No additional editing was performed to mask this original edit. DISC ONE [74:07] set one-a: 01 [00:41] crowd 02 [05:31] Casey Jones > 03 [05:10] Greatest Story Ever Told 04 [06:23] Brown Eyed Women 05 [04:58] Jack Straw 06 [05:05] Box Of Rain 07 [04:17] Deal 08 [03:30] Mexicali Blues 09 [03:41] You Ain't Woman Enough* 10 [09:30] Row Jimmy 11 [03:19] The Race Is On 12 [08:05] China Cat Sunflower > 13 [05:31] I Know You Rider 14 [03:24] Beat It On Down The Line 15 [05:02] Loser *mono DISC TWO [64:14] set one-end: 01 [15:36] Playin' In The Band set two-a: 02 [00:17] crowd 03 [05:42] Bertha > 04 [03:12] Promised Land 05 [05:49] They Love Each Other 06 [04:27] El Paso* 07 [09:22] Black Peter 08 [04:36] Big River 09 [12:10] Here Comes Sunshine 10 [03:07] Me And My Uncle *Tape is bumped(?) causing a tape speed glitch from 03:24 to 03:26. DISC THREE [66:10] set two-end: 01 [00:17] crowd 02 [13:48] He's Gone > 03 [09:03] Truckin' > 04 [00:11] Drums// > 05 [06:29] Other One Jam > 06 [05:24] Me And Bobby McGee > 07 [17:28] Other One* > 08 [09:35] Sugar Magnolia encore: 09 [03:55] Johnny B Goode *At seven spots (09:58, 10:12, 11:43, 11:46, 11:50, 11:55, 12:38)on the tape, it seems the pause button was hit, apparently on the master cassette. These were cross faded in Soundforge to smooth things out. Some cross fades are more evident than others due to an attempt to lose as little of the music as possible. note: There is a master cassette pause after the first notes of He's Gone. Very little music is missing from the tape, and the cut is not abrupt. No extra editing was preformed. |
