sbd - good sound, a tad bit of hiss. Performance - the band continues to play tighter throughout this run so far. Jerry makes an amusing comment about fans standing in front of the spotlights. Atypical for him to be so chatty so I surmise he's having a fun time in NYC. Mr. Charlie, Next Time, Run Rudolf all come across with a polished sound and having Pigpen's tunes nicely sprinkled throughout the set mix up the song styles and offer a nice counterpoint to the Cowboy tunes. PITB has a short jam with Jerry playing rapidly. Little semblance of what this would become in 72. Cryptical/TOO starts off well, with the TOO section exploring quiet, introspective, sparse playing out of which MABM smoothly appears. Check out Garcia's embellishments of this version - nice without being showoffish. TOO then continues with the same quiet, sparse jamming as before, becomes more dissonant (almost too much noodlish) before resuming the remainder. Wharf Rat I liked because it had a good little theme jam in the middle and sounded uniquely different to me than other versions I remember. The rest of the show standard. Jerry thanks the crowd at the end of the encore - usually a sign that he has enjoyed the performance. Overall - best of the Forum run so far, very good sound. I'd put it on a "should hear once list for 71" |
