| Notes | Van Morrison - Caledonia Soul Productions Volume 8 The Berkeley Community Theatre Berkeley, California October 21, 1979 ************* Berkeley '79 was Van's second King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast in less than a year. Collectors are familiar with 1978's Bottom Line, but this lesser known performance surpasses its predecessor. Berkeley boasts the brilliant pairing of Mark Isham and Pee Wee Ellis on horns, honky-tonk piano, and the man himself in top-notch form. Considered by some to be Van's seminal work, the superb album Into The Music is well represented here. Along with Pee Wee and Mark, the band includes fellow ITM alumni Toni Marcus and Herbie Armstrong. Katie Kissoon, always so in tune with Van on vocals, shines throughout. Along with some highly enjoyable reworking of older tunes, the setlist features some of the most celebratory music of Van?s career. "You Make Me Feel So Free" lives up to its title, and a rollicking "Bright Side Of The Road" will make you want to get up and dance. But the highlight of the disc is the soul-searing (and relatively rare) rendition of "Angeliou". Volume Eight delivers excitement from the opening bars of "Kingdom Hall" to the final fading notes of "Wild Night". We believe it's an absolute must for any fan of this era. - CSP ******** The Music 1. Kingdom Hall 2. Bright Side Of The Road 3. Here Comes The Night 4. You Make Me Feel So Free 5. Warm Love 6.
