How fine is the line between a poseur and a dedicated scholar? Razor thin, for a blue-eyed white boy with an abiding love for hip-hop chants, blues vamps, and tumbledown soul grooves. G. Love walks it, however, with good humor, scatterbrained style, and more substance than he's often given credit for. (Beck, of course, beat him to the punch, which didn't much help his credibility.) G. Love, born Garret Dutton in 1972, began his musical career singing on the streets of his hometown of Philadelphia. In 1992 he moved to Boston and hooked up with the Special Sauce band (Jimmy Prescott on stand-up bass, Jeffrey Clemmons on drums). Inspired by Bob Marley, hip hop, jazz, and classic R&B, the group became a college favorite; their eponymous 1994 indie debut sold more than 200,000 copies without significant radio airplay. They perform a bizarre mix of laid-back and horny blues, hip-hop and jazz, served up with a swagger in their live shows. This show has Little Milton as guest. Thanks Miles |
