Robert Randolph [and the Family Band]   02/15/2002

Rathskeller Music Hall, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI
Media SHN   1 disc
Notes Robert Randolph was discovered in 2000 whilst playing his pedal steel guitar at the first Sacred Steel convention in Florida. Randolph (the son of a deacon father and a minister mother) began playing pedal steel as a teenager at his Orange, NJ, church. John Medeski of Medeski, Martin & Wood (MMW) liked Randolph so much that he asked him to record an all-instrumental gospel/blues album, "The Word", with them. Randolph quickly assembled a band, which includes two cousins, Marcus Randolph on drums and Danyel Morgan on bass and vocals, with non-relative John Ginty (the only industry pro in the crew, having played with Lou Reed, Matthew Sweet and Jewel) on the Hammond B-3 organ. Their career began with opening gigs for a variety of blues, jazz-funk, and jam bands such as the Derek Trucks Band, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, and Soulive. The gospel music of Sacred Steel has been enhanced with Randolph's unique touches, including influences from his idol, Stevie Ray Vaughn, as well as R&B, blues and hip-hop. Since then he has become a fixture of the burgeoning live music scene in New York and was recently named in the Rolling Stone?s Top 100 guitarists of all time. Thanks Miles
