| J-Card Comment | I got the first set of this show in 1986 on cassette with only 1 maybe 2 generations from the master. It sparkled. It was the pride of my collection; it was crispy before digital crispy existed. Sixteen years later,I have obtained a true digital copy. I'm not sure when the MC was transferred to DAT, but the sparkle has faded a bit. I cannot say enough about the First Set of this show. I was tempted to only vine the First disc. The Alabama is smokin' from the start Phil is loud, Brent wailin' on the B3, Jerry rippin' fuzzed out solos. Jack Straw rocks on with dancin'sparklin'clean solos and Phil bombs. Dire Wolf bounces along with crispy country solos and Jerry's voice sounding so powerful and ragged at the same time...While the BOYZZ!!sit 'round the fire!El Paso is fun with good solos(Jerry tries to sing the high parts) The first She Belongs is tranquil and powerful, again Jerry's voice is tender and frail then powerful and coarse. Essau grooves. This version of Freind Of The Devil, with strong complimentary ensemble playing from each member,is an absolute masterpeice. The instrumental section alternates with Jerry and Brent exchanging dynamic, spiraling, solos that reach 1977 granduer and magnificence. First set Sailor>Saint!! More rippin' Fuzzed-out Jerry solos, drums churning, Phil pounding. Then comes the Diamond in the Crown!!!! The only thing that tops the Freind of the Devil from this set, is this particular version of Deal. The entire band is smokin' but Garcia tears the fuckin' roof off the mutha. I defy anyone to find a hotter version. The sound improves for a bit for the second set from Miracle through Samson. The crowd goes apeshit when Jerry brings back Crazy Fingers; clearly audible even on the SBD recording. Then rest of the set sound quality is fair.
