| Notes | So, who doesn't yet have a copy of Detroit '74? (2nd night, that is) This is the most commonly traded Tales recording, and for good reason. Mine is Shaun Toole's remaster of a 2nd gen cassette. Even though it is so common, 2.28.74 still remains my favorite Tales show, and likely my favorite Yes show of all time. Maybe it's because it was my first introduction to live Tales, making me therefore partial, maybe not. For me, this is the show that Tales for Topographic Oceans, as an album and a complete performance entity, came together. The band has a connection this night; they also have an edge to them. Yes are really driving these 4 songs. They are on top of every accent, every synchopation - anticipating, nailing. The version of The Remembering is breathtaking. You wouldn't think so (because this is such a melodically driven song), but Alan's playing on it makes the song. The recording (finally!) captures his drums very well, and every one else follows his lead. The nasty cut in Rick's solo on this song has been patched with parts of his solo from 2/26/74, and the previously cut audience applause between certain songs, patched in briefly with some other live material. Sadly, this is the 2nd to last time Yes would play Tales in it's entirety live; this is the last known recording of it all. The next night, they would drop "The Remembering" from the set (of all the songs to drop, NOT THAT ONE!!), and it would make its appearance only one other time on the tour (3.3.74 - in Cincinnati. The only 2 things I dream for in a Yes want-list: The rumoured Proshot video from 2.28.74, and a tape to surface of this Cinci show). Besides the usual "ongoing squabbling with Rick" story, I've always been a bit confused as to why they sudddenly dropped The Remembering from the set, particularly when, in mid to late February, they had begun to really nail this song in concert. It had really taken on a life of it's own, and had lent itself to a different reading each night, depending on the mood of the band. |
