Grateful Dead   10/14/1994

Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
Recording SHNID 9054
Media Shn   3 discs
Notes Scarlet>Fire
J-Card Comment This is from a different source than the currently circulating
Tony Gardner/Paul Bottiglio version on etree. Not only is the
recording level a little higher, but the bursts of digistatic
present during Scarlet and Liberty on the other source are absent
here.

As best I can determine, the lineage is:
Sbd > C > Dat > CDR > EAC > CDR > EAC > Shn

Terrapanda these files match shnid=9054. This show is the rework of Tony Gardner and Paul Bottiglio's original recording. I have both renditions and this one i think is the superior of the two. I will make sure the db link is corrected. I used to have a DAUD recording on tape until i found these incredible shn's, the Scarlet > Fire still blows me away every time i hear it, the jam into Fire is heavenly.
This is by far one of the best shows i attended in 94' . It took me 7 years to find a worthy upgrade and man it is was worth the wait.

For the hottest Scarlet of all time, get 6/18/83 Saratoga...I've yet to hear a better one...I was there, peaking during that one...my brain almost exploded and the tears of joy were rolling down my face....

Just my 2cents.. this run was my only east coast Dead experience, and i remember that i somehow found myself behind the stage during the Fire, and i was able to see the waves of energy rippling from the stage, accross the floor of the Garden.. (of course, the tea helped!).. it's one of my most favorite Grateful Dead memories. Certainly a show worth hearing!

Do yourselves a favor and find the 9.24.03 version from Boston Garden. It could be influenced by my position 2 rows back from Jerry but I still hold it up against post '91 S>Fs as one of the finest. And don't miss the Around & Around (yes, take it or leave it but this one is a taker).

RE: the "legendary" Scarlet > Fire...

It is certainly legendary, given how much people talk about it. But does it live up to the hype? What other answer can one give other than: Yes and no. It really is a superior version, with great energy, great jamming. It's worth having, no doubt about it. But how does it stand up against other versions? I think the 10-1-94 Scarlet > Fire certainly compares. And others, especially 3-22-90, positively blow it out of the water. Jerry's flubbing of one of the verses in "Fire" is comically horrible. I once played it for a friend and she started laughing, and I started laughing, because the flub is truly huge. Not the best version ever, by a longshot, so no, doesn't live up the hype; but the Scarlet > Fire and the whole show are high quality '94 and absolutely worth owning. Check out the "Attics" -- I think it's a better version than the Scarlet > Fire.
