| Tech Notes | "Comments: This is my fourth ever concert recording, and it probably the best sounding one. I would probably give this one a solid "A". Acoustics weren't great at the Webster, and the show wasn't very loud. I made sure to position myself in front of the speakers so I could pick up more music than audience. However there are still spots where the music is fairly quiet. Jon mentioned that this was the roudiest crowd ever for one of his solo shows, but luckily I was off to the side, so the audience doesn't ruin this recording. There are a couple of small issues, first the chairs in the venuue squeak. Secondly, my mic's came unclipped a few times. Hence, there is some "re-adjusting the microphone" noise, but I tried not to play with them during the music. Some EQ was done using Wavelab, and I had to raise the volume on the whole show over 20db! I don't use a bass filter, so I have to be careful not to set the levels too high, or the show will distort. Luckily, these mic's are pretty good, and even with increasing the levels so much after the fact, there is very little hiss. The loud applause you hear in the middle of the "Set Sail" medley was the waitress bringing Jon and gin & tonic. He had made a comment jokingly about wanting one before the song started. Just a quick observation about the visuals at the show that has nothing to do with this recording: The video that Jon uses for "State Of Independence" in the show and on his DVD looks very much like the one Porcupine Tree uses for "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" during their live show. Also, I don't want to give it away for those who haven't seen the show yet, but the video for "You Lift Me Up" is hilarious! -- MP Nov '05" |
