----

This is the second of 2 nights Sonic Youth played in Seattle on their 1998 "A Thousand Leaves" tour. Both shows (Friday & Saturday) featured phenomenally high energy from the band and the crowd, and are probably my favorite performances of the "Thousand Leaves" material. Though I've come to appreciate the way the songs are captured on the album, I still feel they were best experienced in a live form, and though this recording is hardly A quality, I think the true intensity of the material is quite apparent. One of the most ferociously noisy SY shows I've seen!

Both nights were magical, this one had a slightly more vocal crowd (read: very loud -- almost intrusive at times on this recording, but kind of amusing), and maybe a looser performance from the band. I filmed the previous night from front row, Thurston's side, and it's a pretty solid shot (which may work better as a DVD torrent...some day). This night, I was centered between Lee and Kim, and was just kind of co-existing with a very liquid crowd -- video still turned out pretty good, but the audio snapshot is enjoyable on its own.

Every set list on this tour featured the same songs -- 9 from ATL, "Anagrama" from SYR1, "Stil" from SYR2, and "Death Valley '69". The first night in Seattle, they performed "Shadow of a Doubt" for the first time since 1986, and it became a permanent fixture in the set for the remainder of the tour. Most shows ended with an extended improv after "DV69".

I did this transfer for myself several years ago, but have been listening to it lately and thought I'd share. I'd always hoped to get a better transfer done, but for now this is all I can offer. There are a few small cuts while I changed batteries, but no music is affected. The
muffled sounds in DV69 are courtesy of the aforementioned liquid crowd reacting very positively
to the Bad Moon classic...

I wouldn't recommend listening to this with headphones, but it has its charm as a document
of Sonic Youth playing one of their most interesting collection of songs with stunning energy.

If anybody has a copy of this show from an alternate source, please post it!

Enjoy!
