| Notes | In the summer of 1980, while "It's Still Rock & Roll To Me" was rocketing up the pop charts on its way to becoming his first number one single, Billy Joel was barnstorming small clubs on the East Coast with a set of songs he wrote before he became a superstar. This unusual tour served as the basis of SONGS IN THE ATTIC, a live album consisting entirely of non-hits. The songs range from sweet, previously overlooked ballads like "She's Got a Way" (from the then-out-of-print COLD SPRING HARBOR) and "You're My Home" to early concert staples like "Miami 2017" and "Captain Jack," and make for a pretty good picture of what Joel sounded like before he became a household name. About half the album was recorded in arenas - because, as Joel writes in the liner notes, a song like "Miami 2017" "demands the gothic reverberation of New York's Madison Square Garden"--but it's heart lies in the intimate club performances. This disc literally constitutes the takes that didn't make it to the final product. You can here the voice of a production engineer introduce most tracks. There are some alternate takes of songs that actually made it to the album, but most of this disc are other tracks from this special tour, in both arenas and small clubs, and even includes a new song not on any of Joel's major albums (though it could have been a B-Side??). One drop out in "Sometimes A Fantasy". Awesome and rare find!! |
