KUSP-FM broadcast from Soledad State Prison more than once but this Black Uhuru was the first and it's the only one that I have (except for one song by Gil Scott Heron). I remember hearing from one of the sound crew that there was a situation in the prison that forced a partial lock down and the show was moved to a smaller area with less of the prisoners allowed to attend than originally planned. Needless to say it was quite an experience for the KUSP crew to do a live broadcast from this very intense penitentiary! However, except for one comment by Michael Rose of "Free the Captive", there is no mention of the prison during the show and it sounds like just an especially great sounding FM tape.

If you've read this far, I'm sure that you will find this to be a very special performance - accentuated by the fact that the sound quality is terrific for an FM broadcast. Sly and Robbie sure sound great on this one! The bass still sounds very clear even when turned up LOUD!

The interview segment is at the beginning of the disc because it was done before the show anticipating the prison performance. However the interview could be burned at the end or even left off entirely so that the show can then fit on a 74 minute CD.
