If I had to make a list of all the regrets in my life,
missing this show would definitely be in the top 10!

In 1992, Sonic Youth was touring with the primo
Japanoise outfit, The Boredoms. (There's no recording
of The Boredoms' opening show on this date that I am
aware of. If YOU know of one, please PM me at your
earliest convenience!). One stop on their tour was
SUNY-Binghamton, (now Binghamton University) in
the Social Room (now the Nelson Mandela Room -
administrators sure do love to re-name things!). This
recording was made off the board on an Otari 4-track
reel-to-reel machine on decent tape (Maxell as I recall)
by some WHRW-FM DJ's who apparently didn't quite
know what they were doing. For one thing, they used
tracks 1 and 2, 3 and 4 to make the recording when the
standard 1/4-track stereo layout is tracks 1/3 and 2/4.
Consequently, when the 4-track Otari died some time
ago I wasn't able to go back to the original master reel
to make my CD copy of the show. I had to use a first-
generation cassette dub which I'd made on a TDK
metal tape. Also, for some strange reason, the sound
quality dropped off radically on the last 4 tracks on the
master reel. The high end almost totally disappeared. I
re-EQ'd it as best I could using the equalizers on the
Ramsa board in WHRW's production studio. I have
provided MP3 samples of the first and the last track on
the disc for you to check out.

Despite all the complications, I believe that this
program should be heard by more people than just
those who've made dubs for themselves. Now, through
the miracle of bittorrent, you can re-live this historic
show from Sonic Youth's "Dirty" tour.

Trivia department: Lee Ranaldo attended classes at
Binghamton U. in the late 1970's. He was also part of a
band called The Fluks. They played at least one gig on
campus (the Susquehanna Room as I recall). Wonder if
there are any recordings out there of that gig?

This recording is another one from Moe Loogham's
personal vault!
