Santa Claus Is Coming To Town review: Label : Crystal Cat - 543/544 (2CD) Date of the show : December 18, 2000 On December 17th and 18th Bruce Springsteen played two identical setlists. Those 2 shows were announced as The Holiday Show with Bruce Springsteen and the Max Weinberg 7 and Friends. Bruce Springsteen and the Max Weinberg 7 and Friends were in total 23 musicians. If you ever thought Bruce could only play two Christmas songs, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and Merry Christmas Baby, he proves that you were wrong with these shows! Crystal Cat has released the show from December 18th. An hour and a half before the show starts, Bruce plays a soundcheck, with not many people in the Convention Hall yet. Bruce, Southside Johnny, Nils Lofgren, Garry Tallent, Patti Scialfa, Lisa Lowell and Soozie Tyrell start a country version of Hank William's Jambalaya. The second song is also a Hank Williams song: Hey, Good Lookin'. The third and last song of this soundcheck is Elvis' Mystery Train. During the Born in the USA shows Bruce ended the song Bye Bye Johnny with a few lines from this song. The show opens with the horn section (including Garry Tallent on tuba) playing Jingle Bells. Danny Federici plays the accordion on this one. Then Bruce starts playing the piano for an acoustic version of For You. It sounds a lot like the way he played it in the beginning of his career. The second Christmas song is Blue Christmas. It's a country version of this song. After this song Bruce welcomes the audience. Then the Max Weinberg 7 play an instrumental called Powerhouse, which is followed by a rock version of Run Run Rudolph. Jimmy Vivino shares the lead vocals with Bruce. Lucky Town is performed as a real rock song with a lot of guitars in it. The horns in this song sound very cool. (As if this song was written to be played with horns). Then the horns must "tune up a bit" and they start playing chaotic. Some people in the audience are already cheering. The E Street Shuffle begins. The song ends with Curtis Mayfield's Move On Up. Up next is the first performance of Kitty's Back since 1978! After the instrumental solo in this song Bruce starts singing "who's that coming down the alley?". The Big Man Clarence Clemons enters the stage... After this song Patti sings two songs. A new song "Rose" about the time when she worked as a waitress. The second song "As Long As I Can Be With You" she used a lot during the Tenth Avenue part at the reunion tour. Now Bruce, Southside Johnny and Little Steven are going to play This Time It's For Real. A very strong performance of this song! From Little Stevens album "Men without Woman", Until The Good Is Gone is played, followed by All I Needed Was You. After this rock song Nils Lofgren enters the stage. He plays Shine Silently, with a great guitar solo as we are all used from him. During Merry Christmas Baby, Clarence misses his solo and Bruce wants him to play it again. This time he gets it right. So Young And In Love was played just as on the Tracks box. Although it was never played live before, it sounds like they played it more often. Roll Of The Dice is a well performed song. It sounds just as on the 2000 shows were he played it. There is only a bit more backing vocals on this song than we are used. I'm not very impressed by the performance of this song. Bobby Jean was played as we all know it. I don't know why Bruce keeps playing this song at almost every concert he did since 1984. Christmas, Baby Please Come Home was the next song played as a rock song. After this song Bruce thanks everybody. The next highlight is a new song. My City Of Ruins. Bruce plays this song on piano. The song sounds very strong and is ready for a new album ;). The next classic is Little Steven's I Don't Wanna Go Home. The audience sings this song on top of their longs. Bruce, Southside and Little Steven share vocals on it. After this song another surprise: Rosalita! The audience is getting nuts when they hear the first notes of this song. It is the same version as we all know, but it still is a great party song. The last song is the funniest version of Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. Even Bruce's mother sings a line! The sound quality is, as we are used from Crystal Cat, good. They used the same source tape as was used for the Season's Greetings 2 Tree (on both versions you hear that guy yelling for the Big Man during Kitty's Back). They did a great job, because it sounds better than on Season's Greetings. Bruce's voice and the music sound clearer and more up front. |
