| Notes | PINK FLOYD Cleveland, Ohio May 26, 1994 WKYC News Footage BWHI-LRG-VCD04 ================= 01. Pre-Show Stage Footage - 0:35 02. Learning to Fly - 5:21 03. Stage Chatter - 0:18 04. What Do You Want From Me - 4:15 05. On the Walking Away - 2:39 "Anyone reading this who has ever covered live concerts events for the media is probably familiar with the standard rule that you can shoot all the pictures and film you like for the first two or three songs. After that point, however, no photos or other video footage may be shot, unless in specific (and very rare) special cases. In the case of Pink Floyd's 1994 tour, this visual media clearance rule applied to the second and third songs of the band's standard set list - this was most likely stipulated to insure the visual surprise of "Astronomy Domine"'s 70 foot-high slide projections to a prospective audience. Anyway, this is why "Learning to Fly" and "What Do You Want From Me?" are the only songs from these concerts that one could ever spot on the local news whenever a Floyd appearance that evening was being reported on the eleven o' clock wrap-up. Now, for "highlights" of these two songs to be interspersed through an "on-the-scene" news report shown by a local TV station (say ...WKYC in Cleveland), it follows that full versions of these songs were recorded and then edited to fit around the reporter's commentary (or used as a visual "bed" for a voice-over). From there, one can then surmise that a copy of the unedited live footage must therefore exist (or have existed) in the WKYC archives ... and I'll be damned if I didn't quite literally run into a copy of this footage a few years back. The story involved in how I came across this tape in the first place is simply too involved to tell here, but suffice to say that after a bit of wheedling and begging, I was able to procure a low-generation copy of two complete songs shot by the NBC affiliate on that ridiculously frigid May evening." While the WKYC tape admittedly doesn't offer a whole hell of a lot in the area of visual surprises (save for a couple of looks at the silently steaming stage while the band's pre-show sound effects tape is running), it is, regardless, the only way I have ever found to get a pro-shot "What Do You Want From Me" and a non-Mr. Screen version of "Learning To Fly" (yes, I realize how innately geeky all of this must sound, but as we've long ago passed the point of casual fan interest, I don't feel nearly so self-conscious about it anymore). Following these two songs (bridged together by a reasonably chipper David Gilmour welcoming the crowd with a sardonic "Merry Christmas" in response to the 38 degrees Fahrenheit show time temperature), the tape cuts off. The picture then comes back on again after a moment, treating us to three minutes of camera-eye-view footage of the camera crew walking by the audience (with a quick glance towards the stage as "On The Turning Away" blares forth), and then leaving the now-razed stadium itself. Our intrepid reporters then venture forth into the parking lot (all the while obviously freezing their asses off) and clamber into the news van for the ostensibly warmer ride back to the TV station. For those who find such "behind the scenes" touches interesting, this might be worth a look-see. The rest of you can hit stop after "What Do You Want From Me" and be happy with that." - ash` |
