Led Zeppelin   ??/??/1939

Antrabata Studio Sessions, Various, Various
Media CDR   11 discs
Notes A collection of studio odds and ends that is simply amazing in its scope and depth. I wouldn't give anything on here less than a B+ soundwise, and the only issue that really comes up is that some of the work appears in snippets, as you can see by the track listing, and there is varying analog presence at times. However, everything sounds wonderful. The track divisions leave something to be desired; some of the 20 to 45-minute tracks you see are simply take after take of the same song. It would be nicer if each individual take were separated, and that would also increase the replay value. But it's hard to complain about too much here, because this is a truly staggering collection. Of particular interest for long-time Led-heads are the alternate takes of time-tested songs. Of course, none of them are better than what finally made it to the LPs, but it's still fascinating to hear the songs evolve, and to experience them in a new way. If you're a fan, you will love this set, but it's not something you'll likely listen to a bunch of times. Do you need 11 discs of Led Zeppelin studio noodling? Probably not. Is it an enjoyable listen anyway? Fuck yeah.
