J-Card Comment Madonna Live Unknown Venue NY 1985-06-06 AUD complete show(first time in circulation, "The Virgin Tour") Madonna's first-ever NY appearance! mp3 sample

This concert is pop perfection! But, wait a minute... there's a guy in an overcoat coming over (summer's coming, ain't it?). He is looking your way...

Pssst! Hey, YOU! (he says). C'mon over here, I have a secret to tell you. That's it, a little closer, so no one else can hear: You don't have to say that you are taking this concert for yourself. You know, make up a story or something - like it's for your sister if you are worried people will think you are gay. I mean, if you *are* gay, it can still be for your sister - I don't care. It's just that if they catch you dancing and no one else in the whole wide world is there, you should have something to tell them.

That is, unless you are brave and strong about it. TAKE THIS CONCERT DAMMIT!!! And be done with the hand-wringing already!

Sheesh!!

And, he walks away...

->This tape is believed to be the master, but I have no proof any longer. It's also probably Madison Square Garden.<-

Technical notes: Unknown taper (I forgot who, it was a long time ago), unknown equipment. TDK SA90 tape. The master ran about a semitone too fast. It made Madonna sound like Minnie (Mickey Mouse's girl). There was also some extreme-high-end distortion. After fooling with Sound Forge's Pitch Shift, I remembered that the cassette deck was variable speed. Technical note to all you dweebs (I'm a dweeb, so are you if you read this stuff) - it's much, MUCH easier to simply turn the pitch down using an old-fashioned control than it is to fool with a digital slider.

EQ was another matter: After spectral analysis, 2000-4000Hz was dampened, frequencies over 10,000Hz were attenuated gradually to 0, and the largely non-existent bass was boosted as much as practical. No noise reduction was used as tape hiss was wild where there was no recording. You are welcome to do better, please listen to the sample first before taking the show so we think the same way about the recording.
