Two low gen sources for The Doors' performance at the Long Beach Sports Arena on February 7, 1970.
After perfoming 4 concerts over 2 days at the Felt Forum in New York City in the middle of January and
shows at the Winterland Arena the previous two nights, Jim Morrison's voice is noticeably hoarse during
this performance in Long Beach. Still, it doesn't keep him or the band from delivering a dynamic performance.
This concert is one of my favorites and possibly the longest Doors concert ever performed. Unfortunately, no
complete tape exists/has surfaced. Only two sources are known and they are both presented here in the best
sound quality currently available -- namely 1st and 2nd generation copies.
Unfortunately, whoever transferred the first source tape did so at too high a volume. It's still very listenable for
an audience recording, but it should be better. Perhaps a better transfer will appear sometime in the future.
While the first source is the most complete, the second source was taped much closer to the stage and compares
to audience recordings from the Felt Forum. Sadly, the recording device used by the taper had some severe
problems. Every song on the second source is cut -- some horribly so. I'm including this source as a companion
piece to the more complete first source. There's really no way to enjoy listening to the second source without
there are some worthwhile snippets in there that make for a more than worthy addition to fans' collections
(Jim's dialogue with the audience, for example). The second source is also the only source that includes clips of
the songs "Universal Mind," "Carol," and "The End." Unlike circulating versions of this copy, all the songs are in
their correct order. With these caveats in mind, I hope you enjoy this show and the two sources for it. Here's
hoping a more complete copy surfaces one day and we can hear everything that went down that night.
