| Tech Notes | The Doors/Aretha Franklin "Murray The K In New York" 1967 WPIX-TV Special "I originally thought about posting the entire show (which also featured Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, The Association, Richie Havens, plus a few nobodys) however, upon looking at it again, it became clear that the majority of the performances were lip synced which is a sure trip to Bannation on DAD. The other thing is that there are many sequences that are not particularly musical or all that entertaining. There are a couple dance sequences with Murray, one more ballroom style, the other with him doing some sort of Emmett Kelly impression in a hobo clown suit. The show was also a vehicle to promote Murray's large breasted, big haired wife, Jackie The K, as she appears as some sort of secret agent fighting off aliens and ninjas as a sub-plot which occupies a considerable amount of the 75 minute running time of the show. The Doors and Aretha Franklin portions were the only segments torrentable here as they feature a live vocal over a pre-recorded backing track. I am only including the "People Are Strange" clips as the "Light My Fire" segment uses the released track as it's background while the Doors do a few windsprints in a park, interspersed with more aliens and ninjas fighting off Jackie and her girls. As a bonus, I did include a portion where one of the alien girls rips a medallion from around Jim's neck and speeds away with Jackie in hot pursuit. The Aretha Franklin portion was just too good to leave out. Sorry Doors fans, if Aretha's not your cup of tea, but it's Lady Soul...I can't leave her on the cutting room floor! Track listing is as follows; DOORS People Are Strange (Take 1) People Are Strange (Take 2 Incomplete) People Are Strange (Take 3) People Are Strange (Take 4-the final version used in the show) ARETHA FRANKLIN Baby I Love You Respect NTSC Format Full Menu Audio: AC3 - 192kb/s Video: 7941 kbps - 29.97 frames/s Lineage-2" Quadraplex Video Tape > 3/4 Umatic > Time Base & Color Correction > DVD This is probably the best quality you'll find of it, as the story I hear is that the original 2" quad tapes were deteriorating rapidly when the transfer to 3/4" was made. The 3/4" tape was shedding oxide pretty badly as well, so a clean digital transfer was made using a specially prepared machine that had an air nozzle mounted near the rotating playback head to keep it clear of debris long enough to get a clean transfer.
