| Tech Notes | Sunday Night Broadcast January 15, 1989 (NTSC DVD) (XP/LPCM, 44m) Series Overview: "Sunday Night" (1st season) and "Night Music" (2nd season) was a show broadcast on US television during the 1988-89 and 1989-90 seasons. Many think it was the best music-oriented show ever broadcast in this country and I'd be hard put to disagree. It was hosted during the first season by Jools Holland and David Sanborn and during the second by Sanborn alone. I wouldn't be surprised if the show was the template or at least the inspiration for "Later with Jools Holland." One of the most interesting features of the show was the unusual pairings of musical guests such as Richard Thompson and John Cale, Eric Clapton and Robert Cray and the like. Each episode also featured an archival clip or two, ranging from the musical to the bizarre. The show boasted a killer house band, with players like Marcus Miller, George Duke, Hiram Bullock and Omar Hakim. As far as I know, the shows have never been rebroadcast in the US or been made available commercially. I believe at least some of them were rebroadcast in Japan at some time during the 1990s but I've seen no commercial product from that series either, and I've been looking. The executive producer of the show was Lorne Michaels of "Saturday Night Live" fame, by the way. This Episode Notes: George Duke is the guest musical director. Mino Cinelu sits in with the band. There is a short glitch during chapter 3 at about 0:14:00. This Episode : Setlist: 1) Intro 2) Curtis Mayfield - "Pusher Man" 3) David Lindley - "Bon Temps Rouler" 4) Shinehead - "Unity" 5) Coleman Hawkins - Archival Clip 6) Taylor Dayne - "Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)" 7) Curtis Mayfield & David Talk 8) Curtis Mayfield - "It's All Right" 9) David Lindley - "Werewolves Of London" (with Jorge Calderon) 10) Outro 11) Curtis Mayfield & Taylor Dayne - "People Get Ready" Lineage: Cable >VHS (HiFi audio @ SP speed) > Panasonic DVD Recorder (archived to DVD-RAM)> TMGenc DVD Author 3 |
