| Tech Notes | "This recording is mostly soundboard, with bits here and there mixed in from my mono audience tape recorded with a hand-held tape recorder and a decent external microphone. The excerpt from Moonsongs, and the full songs Behold the Man and Warheads had to be removed from this torrent because they were officially released on the "Encore" boxed set. Those who own the box and some audio editing software should be able to piece the whole set back together... Notes: A few years after this performance, I managed to snag a soundboard copy of the set, but unfortunately it was incomplete. The first couple minutes of "Dead Silence" were missing, and there were other small gaps here and there. Plus, being a soundboard, you couldn't really hear the stage annoucements or audience response all that well. Since rumors persist that half the audience fled after the band played their opening notes, I felt compelled to mix in my audience recording of the ROAR of approval that followed almost every song, and I also patched in the missing bits of music and stage banter. This was one of the few ProgDay performances that had to be held indoors due to rain, but that probably increased my enjoyment of this set. Seeing the band from about five feet away in a small club with a really entusiastic crowd all around made it a very memorable performance. The set list is very similar (possibly identical?) to what appears on the band's live disc from NEARFest a year or so later, but this performance has a few differences here and there. Personally, I prefer this show, but that's probably because it was my introduction to the band. Oh, and the reason Dave Kerman says "Don't look at my body" early in the set is because he took his shirt off due to the warm temperature inside the club. About ProgDay: If you enjoy this torrent (or any of the many other ProgDay torrents), then please help support the festival. Buy a ticket, even if you aren't sure you can attend. ProgDay runs on a break-even budget every year, and sometimes doesn't even reach the break-even point. So if you're listening to all these torrents for free, you can thank the many financial backers the festival has had over the years. But to ensure that it continues in the future, buy a ticket and go if you can. It's always a great time - good bands, friendly people, beautiful surroundings, CD vendors and an all-around, relaxed atmosphere. Visit the web site for more info: http://www.progday.com About Thinking Plague: This great avant prog band has been around for decades, but CD releases and live performances are rare. As far as I know, all their albums are still available on CD: A Thinking Plauge and Moonsongs were re-released not long after this show as a 2-albums-on-1-CD deal. In This Life and In Extremis are both great discs (the latter is probably my favorite). The more recent History of Madness didn't grab me as much, but it's still pretty good. And, as mentioned above, there's the live album from NEARFest, "Upon Both Your Houses". Here's Cuneiform's web page for the band: http://www.cuneiformrecords.com/bandshtml/thinking.html" |
