| Tech Notes | "MINI BIO: "Mammatus are a new four piece rock band from Santa Cruz, California. [Their debut] album consists of four long tracks, the longest, "Dragon of the Deep Part 2" clocks in at a staggering 25 minutes long. With an excess of fuzz and wah noise they manage to combine all the best bits of 70's psychedelic rock with the sonic attack of early Monster Magnet as they simultaneously enter the realm of heavy drone sludge rock. The sleeve of this album was crafted by Arik Roper who has also worked with likes of Sleep, Sunn O))), Comets on Fire and Arthur Magazine. Since forming at the beginning of 2005 Mammatus have been playing regularly in their native town of Santa Cruz and in venues in San Francisco which has gathered them lots of praise and interest. They are embarking on an intense nation wide tour with their friends Residual Echoes this summer. A deluxe vinyl version is upcoming." --Holymountain.com "While Mammatus hasn't been around for very long, they deliver on just about every level. Their self-titled debut draws heavily on the cornerstones of mind warping, heavy music--Hawkwind, Sleep, Floyd, Sabbath... It's both heavy, soothing, and altogether engrossing. Bottom line, if you want your head caved in and you want to feel really good about it, get this..." --StonerRock.com BAND PAGES: http://www.holymountain.com/mammatus.html http://www.myspace.com/mammatus Setlist: unknown titles, including "Dragon of the Deep pt. III" and "Pierce the Darkness" SHOW NOTES: I'll lead this off the same way I led off the notes for the headliner of this show - by quoting an email I sent to my history professor, edited only for clarity where need be: ===== To: Professor Subject: Reading Assignment #2 Dr. Prof - I am fast becoming the Cal Ripken of late assignments. The tardiness of this paper is even more spectacular than the last - nearly seven times the tardy! There is no excuse that could possibly suffice, so I shan't waste your time with one. Before we get to the attachment, however, one small "errata" must be dealt with, and dealt with promptly. I will confess, there was a time - three, perhaps four weeks ago - where I promised myself, my conniving, self-centered, twenty-something slacker self - that I would "dip out" - that is to say, abandon your class early - to attend an experimental jam-session in NW DC. Of course, I am sure you noticed that I was in your class, the entireity of your class, every day since the beginning of March, and no doubt you are looking now to repair this mental inconsistency. Well - I hope it doesn't come across as buttering you up (I'm more of a margarine man) when I state that the one factor which kept me from attending said show was not the sudden realization of traffic, fatigue, or apathy. Rather, it was the fact that the night's lecture, like every lecture thus far, was outstanding, and like a fool, I found myself seduced by the sirens' song. Excuse after excuse came to mind, and when we finally let out for break, I managed to make it halfway to my car before rationalizing that, well, I'd already be a bit late to the show... and the lecture was pretty good, after all. Like a darn fool, I turned around, and headed, sheep-like, back to class, and while it pains me to say this, I cannot honestly say that I made a mistake. That said, tonight there's a band from Japan playing in Baltimore, and I've been wanting to hear them live for years, and I was going to inform you in advance but got my dates hopelessly criss-crossed. Till next Monday - ===== Let Doctor Professor fail me as hard as he likes, if he wishes. This show was far and away incredible, incredible enough to risk jeopardizing my Serious Upstanding Academic Future to have seen in person. I've been jeopardizing my Serious Upstanding Academic Future for the past twenty years, after all, and yet every day I wake up, there's still seriously upstanding academia in my future. While the highlight of the night was the Acid Mothers - of course - Mammatus took me completely by surprise. As it turns out, the majority of the band resides in Santa Cruz, a city I've had the pleasure of residing within not once by twice. Nice city, nice people. Mammatus followed a dreary, posturing punk act, and sent the energy in the venue sky-high. As things stand - nice California boys off in the ugly, grungy wilds of the East coast - they managed an incredibly tight show, even with the bass drum pedal breaking two songs into the set. The band reminds me a lot of all those goofy ideas one would dream up with their stoner buddies on a lazy Friday afternoon - except that these guys actually managed to put it all together, obviously having fun in the process, and creating a result that is outright enjoyable (self-indulgent, sure - but so is Tchaikovsky). Give the boys a semester of theatrical training (of the character building, "you laugh you die" variety), and the self-indulgent aspects will barely stick out at all. The setlist followed a vague concept sketch: Dragons on the attack, Japanese pipe music, a lone wizard and his noblemen four doing their best to keep the dragon at bay the only way they know how - by the creation of intense stoner-metal sludge. The music was positively awe-inspiring, regardless of what one thinks about silly costumes and concept-dramas. I was giddy with excitement at the prospect of recording them again the next night. Alas, that recording did not turn out perfectly, thanks to a boneheadedly bold manuever upon my part. TORRENT NOTES: Track list: 01. Track 01 (cuts in abruptly, first ~0:05 missing) [11:51] 02. Track 02 [8:33] 03. Dialogue Regarding Bass Drum Pedal [1:46] 04. Dragon of the Deep III [11:12] 05. Dialogue Regarding Band's Travels [1:29] 06. Pierce the Darkness [6:39] 07. Flute Outro [2:36] "Flute Outro" may well be a part of Pierce the Darkness - unfortunately, this intrepid taper had only funds enough for a single album, and aforementioned album does not contain Pierce the Darkness. RECORDING NOTES: Play it loud. A little bit of creeping distortion here and there, but I find it actually compliments the heaviness of the music being performed. REQUESTS: Do not sell this recording. Do not smoke this recording. Do not buy this recording. Do not sell this recording, then buy it from yourself to smoke on a later date. If you're ever driving along Howard Street in Baltimore, and feel the urge to smoke this recording, at least make sure to first tune your radio to an AM station, as the light rail wires are guaranteed to create a right darn "trippy" effect. Include this source information when trading or smoking. ============== Feel ABSOLUTELY FREE to convert to MP3, OGG, or even, under particularly dire circumstances, WMA/AAC. There are people out there who are bandwidth or disk-space deprived, and there's absolutely no reason why a bunch of pretentious taper egos should cause these potential fans to miss out on a new experience. Just do your duty and give me some credit. And hey, it's not like words in an info.txt file have ever prevented any misdeeds. ============== Those of you uneasy about ending up with MP3 sourced material in trade, do yourselves a favor, and visit http://www.audiohub.org/get/fa/fa.htm - a webpage that explains, on pretty idiot-friendly level, how to detect lossy sourced audio, using free programs such as EAC and TAU. When setting up your trades, ask for a minute long .FLAC sample, if you're that utterly paranoid, and you can see just what kind of lineage you're getting. And, finally, to borrow a line from one of the classics of American TV: Keep circulating the tapes (/CDs/DVDs/Hard drives/Shows in general) I'm always looking to trade shows and share banter. Visit my etree.org page or drop me a line.
