Stinking Lizaveta   04/01/2008

Hafenklang, Hamburg, Germany
Source Greenmachine's binaural microphones + battery box -> Sony MZ-N1 (LP2) (Line-In, manual record volume, 19/30) -> Audigy 2 (Line-In) -> Audacity 1.2.6 -> flac 1.2.1, options: -P 4096 -b 4608 -m -l 8 -q 0 -r 3,3
Media Flac CDR   1 disc
Tech Notes Great sounding recording, but I found that all of the files failed md5 verification. Zwaar explained, "i remember having problems to check other people's md5-files too because there is no platform crossing standard of how to save them. since i'm using a unix system i use a program called "md5sum". the first thing i'd recommend is checking them manually and not automated by whatever application you use (that's how i check other people's md5 files right now). if they don't match i'd guess that your copies are really corrupted :(" But luckily the checksums match, so this happens to just be a weird anomaly.

Review:

Stinking Lizaveta's last concert in Hamburg with The Hidden Hand was purely
amazing, so of course I went to see them again. A lot of concerts that I've
been attending to in the recent past took place in the Hafenklang in Hamburg
which is a really nice venue. It's actually just a normal pub with a concert
hall in the cellar, but it's easy to reach, the prices are decent and it's
just a comfortable place to have some beers before and after the concert.

This time Stinking Lizaveta played as support for Weedeater, as the name
suggests it's a stoner rock/sludge band. One can argue about this
band combination but since Stinking Lizaveta stand above all attempts of
pigeonholing it's a perfect match i think.

Stinking Lizaveta started with a song i couldn't recognize, but it was brutal,
as if they were saying "Attention everyone, we're here!", Stinking Lizaveta
don't compromise musically, gladly so. They treated the audience with their
superb mix of unusual rhythmic sections combined with awesome grooves and
complex eruptions of technical finesse. It's even more fun to watch them
because they don't hide that they're having fun performing. As a side effect
you often find yourself nodding your head out of rhythm.

SL were acknowledged with a lot of applause from the audience (I guess it
was around 40-60 people) and played one encore, a slow song "for Weedeater"
whose bass player actually requested "We Are Family" whereupon Yanni
explained to the audience that Weedeater trade their shirts for drugs because
they hadn't been getting enough recently :)

Great concert, i hope they will be around again next year or earlier.
