| Notes | Liner Notes (uninvited94 / 2009-01-06): What a show. You have to imagine those guys didn´t tour properly since 12/1989, they were officially disbanded, they had lost most of their "audience" due to the implosion of the GDR - people were sick of them being some protagonists of the "old system". Whatever. The main difference between Western and Eastern Germany for the band was: In Eastern Germany, they had an AUDIENCE, in Western Germany, they had FANS. In 1990/91, the Puhdys had their hiatus, but they started things that did not really succeed. "Maschine" Birr had a new band with Klaus Schwarfschwerdt, "Maschine & Männer", but they played in front of 50 people - when they played. The PUHDYS occasionally did some TV-dates in Western Germany during 1990, and they played their traditional pre-Christmas-date in Villingen-Schwenningen. I was there, I only quite remember they played "Baba O´Riley" (!!) as encore, I believed they sucked for a long time, but watching my VHS-copy of that show about a week ago made me think they were really good. Far from being perfect, wrong verses etc., but they seemed quite hungry. I actually was in the audience in Wadern, I was 14 years old, it was my 5th Puhdys-show since 1985, there would be 20+ more to follow and I really do remember maybe a dozen of the performances from the boys, but this one was great. Again, missing or wrong verses here and there, but, again, a most interesting setlist and they seemed to have fun. And they performed "Cigarettes & Whiskey", one of only 2 times I can confirm they played it. They were booked by fans back then via the old fanclub-organisation in Paderborn, they usually played small towns and, as mentioned, they quite only played Western Germany. That would change after their official comeback in 1992, but this era should be regarded as the era in which they played for their fans. Sad they usually don´t speak about that era today. |
