01 Improv (early Yellow Ledbetter)
02 Quick Jams (Weird A - early Animal)
03 Goat

Notes:
I received a cassette copy of this on a B&P or trade back in 1998 from
someone who posted in the alt.music.pearl-jam newsgroup. I took the guy
up on the offer and got a cassette with these three songs on it. Now, they
have been in circulation for a while, and I think the circulating copies are
of better quality, but I am sharing these anyways because these came from the
10/13/90 tape and it has the complete version of Goat on it.

I've had these for a while, but it wasn't until I read this story that it
jogged my memory of me actually having this tape. I tried hiss reduction on
the songs with no avail, and the fades are the same ones I included back when
I recorded this on the pre-natal version of SoundForge back in 1998.

Story on PJ early demos from DigiJam.org (2/22/02):

Early Pearl Jam Demo - Update

The following contains more information about the early
Pearl Jam demo tape that has resurfaced as described in
a previous news story. This piece was written with the
owner of the tape - an exuberant and generous fan - and
hopefully is another chapter in the story of early Pearl
Jam demos.

Pearl Jam Early Recordings History has collected the known
info of these demos to date and has accurately identified
the known demo flavors:

* The 10/13/90 demo - part of which filtered into the
trading community in 1998, including "Goat", "Improv"
(actually "Yellow Ledbetter") and a short instrumental jam
* "Mookie Blaylock Demos" - an oft bootlegged collection
of early demo tracks
* The "Pre-Ten demos" - another early bootleg collection
with the glaring addition of "Daddy Could Swear, I Declare"

To add to this list is this new cassette labelled
"Eddie in Seattle 10/23/90". Here's the news that may
surprise many of you. These tracks on these tapes are
all the same. Although all of 10/13/90 has not surfaced,
the three songs from it that have been circulated are
identical to those on the 10/23/90 demo. Here is the
track listing of the 10/23/90 tape:

Side 1:
Even Flow
Once
Breath
Release
Girl
Goat

Side 2:
Alive
Alone
Oceans
Black
Improv
Weird A
Daddy

Similarly, the 10/13/90 tape contains:

Side 1:
Even Flow
Once
Breath
Release
Girl
Alive
Goat

SIDE 2:
Alone
Oceans
Black
Improv
quick jams

Interestingly, on the 10/23/90 tape "Alone" is not listed
on the J-card by Ed. "Goat" and "Alive" are reversed in order
from the 10/13 tape because "Goat" fit well onto side one,
and "Alive" would have been too long. On this tape, the
instrumental after "Yellow Ledbetter" is labeled "Weird A", but
it is the same short instrumental improv previously circulated
from 10/13, rather than the "Weird A" which appears on the Gossman
Project demos - Stone's original intrumental demos - which was an
early version of "Animal". On the 10/13 tape, these tracks are
listed as "Improv" and "quick jams". Lastly, 10/23 includes "Daddy,
Could Swear I Declare", which is the first time we have been
able to link that song to a Pearl Jam demo tape, although the
consensus is that Ed is definitely singing but Pearl Jam is not
the backing band. It's not Bad Radio either, so if you know this
track's origins, please email us. Is "Daddy" on 10/13? There is
an "etc." listed, so it's possible it is on there.

The "Pre-Ten demos" appear to be a "same songs, different order"
offering from the early days of Pearl Jam bootlegging in the 1990s.
"Breath", "Even Flow" and "Alone" appear on the Mookie Blaylock,
10/13, Pre-Ten and 10/23 and are probably identical on all. Also,
"Girl" and "Release" are identical to the 10/23, even though they
do not appear on Pre-Ten. However, the Pre-Ten demos also included
"Oceans" and "Daddy", which did not appear on Mookie Blaylock.
Comparing these to the 10/23, they are identical.

As for a good explanation on how the tape sounds, this part is
best said by its owner:

"I have known for years that all the demo songs we had were the
same versions - those that I could compare anyway. Basically, these
songs were "Even Flow", "Breath" and "Alone". How did I know this?
By spending hours comparing them with headphones - basically note
for note. I began to suspect that all the demos might be the same
when I became obsessed with hearing the 10/13, which to this day
has not been entirely released. I have yet to hear this tape in its
entirety. I then noticed that the Mookie Blaylock demo tape we had
been listening to for years had a very similar order:

Mookie Blaylock Demo:
Even Flow, Once, Breath, Release, Girl, Alive, Alone

Of course, "Black" and "Oceans" were missing as well as "Goat"
and the improvs at the end - but it seemed too much of a coincidence
that the order was so similar! As I suspected, the Mookie Blaylock
demo was actually the 10/13 demo with certain songs removed.

Other than the exclusion or addition of a few songs, and different
orders, the quality of the various demos is really the only difference.
The 10/23's quality is nice. It appears 10/13 is also the same. Also,
for those of you have not heard 10/13, like me, hearing the "Black" demo
for the first time was an incredible rare treat. 10/23 is no different
basically from what you have heard, but if you didn't listen closely, you
might think it was, because you can hear it so much better than anything
we've heard before. Ed's voice is really front and center on the demos,
much more so than the studio cds. You will be amazed at "Oceans", for
instance. The guitar work is also clear, and there are many very cool
things the band did with these songs that I couldn't hear before due to
the poor quality of the other demos. "Alive" has the extended instrumental
end as on the Mookie Blaylock demo, and it's really pretty cool if you
enjoy hearing the band go on a bit longer with something. "Black" is
totally gorgeous. There are some word changes also.

So essentially I blew alot of money just to help prove the theory
that all the early demos are going to be the same. The 10/13 tape
has been in hiding for years, and has been the subject of much
anticipation since the J-card was posted, but I seriously doubt
if it's going to be any different from what we've already heard.
If it is - should it ever see the light of day in its entirety -
I will be the first to be thrilled.

The good news here is that we can tell you that the 10/13/90 will
also surface shortly because the owner of a copy of this tape has
come forward! With this tape, we will be able to compare the 10/13
and 10/23 tape. If the assessment is that the tapes are the same,
then the issue comes up whether the date is really 10/13/90 or 10/23/90.
10/13/90 was the first day of rehearsals as a band and 10/23/90 was
the day after the first show as a band. The songs on this demo are
well-rehearsed, there are overdubbed vocals, and the mix is adequate -
not something that can be compiled on the first ever day of rehearsal -
giving creedence to the latter date of 10/23/90. Regardless, the
recording is almost certainly from any point in that ten-day period
and the contents of the tape are what is really important. Look for
yet another update in a few weeks when a copy of that tape is received.

You're probably asking "Enough talk, how can i get a copy of this!?".
The tape's owner was emphatic about circulating this tape as quickly
and as far-reaching as possible, so that's what we're trying to do.
Copies on CDR are already making their way to fans, so if you get a
copy, hop on your favorite Pearl Jam message board and offer up an
extra copy for a fellow friend. Also, our friends at PresentTense.net
are currently hosting MP3s - special thanks to them! Hopefully hearing
the demos will allow you to hear the band in a new way. One thing for
sure is you will be hearing the band the way it was almost twelve(!)
years ago. It's certainly been a long wait - but worth it.
