This is actually a soundboard or to be accurate, a half soundboard as only one channel recorded. I got this some 30 years ago along with a few other boards from a Michigan grad who knew a local sound man.

i though JM only played live with miles at the Cellar door...???
did they do many gigs??

[hr][/dir]

The only known live recordings of Miles and JM are this one, Cellar Door, and a few shows from the 1980's and 1990's. JM played with the band as an 'unofficial member' in late February and early March 1970. There is a report of JM playing with Miles in the Jazz Workshop, Boston, late February or early March.

in a may 1969 Melody Maker interview John McLaughlin said he had played
a show with Miles Davis (but did not mention where).

Jan Lohman (Miles Davis discography) said there were a couple of other shows and John McLaughlin mentioned once in a magazine
interview they also played in Rochester after Ann Arbor but no audio has ever surfaced

And from memory there is a college radio station interview I think it's backstage just after a Mahavishnu Orchestra show in mid or late 1972 (Albany ??) when McLaughlin was asked about playing with Miles Davis at the Cellar Door (must have been at the time Live Evil was getting released) and asked if there were any other shows McLaughlin said " oh yeah after that we went and played in New Orleans "

I sent a copy to Jan Lohman the New Orleans show was news to him if I can find the interview ....... and it is how I remember it :-P
I will seed it on Dime

and of course after Lifetime broke up McLaughlin played with Miles in Boston in march 1971 there is audio of one of the shows
but McLaughlin is not on that set and it's here where McLaughlin told Miles he couldn't join his band
as he had written a lot of new music and then Miles told him to form his own band and to go and see Nat Weiss

This is very interesting.

Enrico Merlin mentions the following shows with JM in his discography:

Feb 1970 - Unknown club, Rochester, New York
Feb 21, 1970 - Ann Arbor
Late Feb/Early March 1970 - Jazz Workshop, Boston
Dec 19, 1970 - Cellar Door, Washington D.C., 2nd show only
Late 1970/Early 1971 - Unknown location ("It's About That Time" and "Sanctuary" on the album "Live Evil")
Dec 20, 1970 - Loyola Fieldhouse, New Orleans, LA
Jan 1971 (poss) - Smith College Theatre, Northampton, MA
April 1971 - Unknown venue, Madison, WI

JM was not in the band on Feb 28 (Univ of Connecticut) and March 11-14 (Lennies on the Turnpike, Peabody), or March 19 (Tyrone Guthrie Theatre, Minneapolis). According to Jan Lohmann, JM played with the band on March 16, 1971, in the Alice Tully Hall, NYC (Grammy Awards Ceremony), but according to Enrico JM wasn't there.

Are you going to seed the Dec 20 show, or just the interview?

Thanks for the info.

Chick Corea's gig list says this was the only gig he did with the Miles Davis band with McLaughlin. The only other McLaughlin/Davis live I know of was the Cellar Door in '71.

I was at the Ann Arbor gig (I was part of the group that put the weekend festival on). The 21st was Miles opening and Ron Carter Closing (Miles' choice).

The second night was Cannonball Adderley with William Fisher and Alvin Batiste.

sorry there is no audio known to exist of the New Orleans show
the interview was backstage October 1972 in Troy where McLaughlin mentioned the 1970 New Orleans show in answer to a question about the Cellar Door show

> John McLaughlin post concert interview : Troy University 10/1972 13 mins FM ex-

Fantastic that the magnificent Enrico Merlin was able to use that snippet of info and do research (newspaper archives on microfilm) and locate the venue and correct date of the show ........... what Enrico and Jan Lohmann do is quite amazing ........... truly a labor of

>JM played with the band on March 16, 1971, in the Alice Tully Hall, NYC (Grammy Awards Ceremony),

Well the video should exist and they were showing rebroadcasts of the Grammy Awards on TV in Japan a few years ago
.......... anyone got the 1970 Grammy Awards ??!!! :yikes:

I am sure McLaughlin said in a magazine interview after Lifetime broke up he went up to Boston played with Miles and it's then Miles suggested he form his own band
people used to think it was Lennies on the Turnpike untill the boot turned up but possibly McLaughlin was only there for one date
......... it would be nice if someone could ask him backstage one day.

One person to ask would be on one-word Johann Haidenbauer as he has a big McLaughlin archive and is quite good at keeping records
........ me, I rely on my memory ...... which is not a good idea !!!
It may have been told in the book about Mahavishnu Orchestra "Power and the Passion" I have not read it yet anyone know if it does explain if it was Boston ?
