Notes:

Recorded with my usual set-up of a Panasonic portable
tape recorder connected to two decent external microphones.
After all the other glitches and dropouts in my recordings
of the other Sunday bands, I was worried about this one,
but it came out beautifully. One of the best recordings
of the weekend, of one of the best performances of the
weekend. The only problem that I noticed is that the
first few minutes of the first encore sound "off balance"
(the volume level of the right microphone seems a little
low), but that eventually corrects itself. The rest of
the set sounds fine.

Any help identifying the two encore songs would be most
appreciated. It's driving me nuts because they both
sound familiar but I've compared them to all five of
the band's CDs and can't find a match.

About ProgDay:

ProgDay is an outdoor festival of progressive rock
that has been held annually since 1995. In 1996 it
was expanded from one day to two and has been hosting
anywhere from eight to eleven progressive rock bands
each year since. The event takes place at beautiful
Storybook farm, unless rain forces it indoors (which
has fortunately only happened twice in the festival's
history). It's a relaxed atmosphere, where you can
view from anywhere you want - right up against the stage
for the bands you like, or back in the vendor tent while
CD shopping during bands you're not wild about. The
people are friendly, and the band members often hang out
all weekend taking in the show and chatting with fans
when they're not on stage. If you're a prog rock fan
and can possibly attend, it's well worth the effort.
The festival just barely breaks even (or sometimes
doesn't), so every ticket sold really helps. Go if
you can.

About Secret Oyster:

This band started when saxophone player Vogel left
Burnin' Red Ivanhoe in 1972 to start a new group.
He formed Secret Oyster with Bohling and others,
and after recording their self-titled debut album,
there was a line-up change which brough Streenberg
in on drums. Those three long-time members are
joined on this set by two younger (but very talented)
musicians on keyboards and bass.

The band's music is great instrumenal jazz fusion
with a very 70s sound. The closest comparison would
probably be to Weather Report, and back in the 70s it
seemed like Secret Oyster were set to follow in that
band's footsteps, being signed to the same label with
the promise that they would be promoted in the US as
the next big fusion group. Unfortunately jazz fusion
fell out of favor before that happened.

With the recent CD reissues of their 70s albums (Secret
Oyster aka Furtive Pearl, Sea Son, Vidunderlige Kaelling
and Straight to the Krankenhaus), the band came out of
retirement to play NEARFest in '07. That resulted in
the release of "Live in the USA 2007" and an invite to
headline ProgDay. On their way to Chapel Hill, they
stopped off in Baltimore and played at Orion Studios
two days before this performance, which makes this only
the third show they've ever played in the United States.
