| J-Card Comment | Larry Coryell solo acoustic Little Center, Clark University Worcester, Mass. June 23, 1976 (there seems to be some question about this date since school was not in session at the time at Clark Univ. but that's what was on the tape) performance quality: very good recording quality: A source: 1st gen. soundboard tape (a/k/a "pre-FM") lineage: WCUW radio master reel > played on Revox reel deck into Tascam cassette deck (dolby off) > Maxell XLII-S cassette > soundforge 4.5 > FLAC 6 > torrentially yours. runtime: 68:20 setlist: 1: Julie La Belle 8:31 2: Ju Ju (Wayne Shorter) 3:30 3: Rodrigo reflections 6:38 4: eyes of love 3:25 5: improvisations on Robert de Visée's Sarabande 5:42 6: the restful mind 3:57 7: gratitude 5:00 8: bouquet (Bobby Hutcherson) 5:16 9: René's theme (René Thomas) 2:22 10: ain't it is John Lee) 7:04 11: St. Gallen 9:48 12: Spain (Chick Corea) 7:02 comments: More from the concerts not heard on etree. According to their listing, Larry didn't do any solo shows in 1976 at all, and he probably didn't do alot of them. this is the only 76 Coryell I've heard (other than 11th House). I don't know if this is a whole set, but what is on this tape is 12 very nice acoustic tunes, some from "the Restful Mind" and various studio Coryell albums. This is the first of what will be a few offerings from one of my favorite guitar players. Other than a few 11th House posts, I haven't seen much Larry Coryell up at all, very surprising considering how many recognize his gift for guitar. Even Al DiMeola has referred to Larry Coryell as "the Godfather of fusion guitar", and in 1971 he released "Fairyland" (live in Montreux 1971, 4 brilliant songs) and then in 72 released "Barefoot Boy", 2 of the all time greatest jazz albums ever released (imho). Ever since seeing Coryell play that Barefoot Boy material at the Orpheum in Boston 1972, I have been PRAYING that SOMEBODY recorded that show, it was one of the best concerts I ever saw by anyone (and before I was recording, I was just 15 at the time...) Larry Coryell is not only a great guitarist, he doesn't play the same thing every time. Very far from it. His bands and songs vary enormously in style, Larry is excellent with either an acoustic or electric guitar, and has played with several amazing players, which I plan to share some of. There will be at least one earlier Coryell to come from me, and a couple of later ones not heard before, in upcoming days. But it starts with the man himself, and probably the best quality live Coryell recording of any kind I've heard yet. I suspect this was broadcasted at some time, but this does not come from an FM broadcast (over WCUW, the quality could never be an A because their signal reception is a D quality on a GOOD day!!!) The music is quality too, always is with Larry Coryell. Category? Well, my favorite Larry is jazz, no doubt about that, some of the best jazz there is. This, like alot of the Coryell I'll be sharing, goes into several categories of music style, so for lack of any better ideas, this is a jazz torrent (maybe), but it is an all solo acoustic one (definitely) so that's where it goes... Do not sell this recording. Trade freely and losslessly. No eMPty3 for Larry. (except for the sound sample). |
