| J-Card Comment | Skylab 1983-01-12 (Jan 12) The Parrot Club Baltimore Maryland Lineage: Sanyo boombox w stereo mic recording (circa 1982) > Master cassettes > 1st gen cassette copy > Wav > Flac > you Paul Saroka (Carl Filipiak) - Lyricon, Fender Rhodes, Roland synth, Announcements Tony Bunn (Sun Ra, Larry Bright) - Beautiful white PRS Custom 5 string fretless bass (first bass PRS ever made) Jake Sheffer - Gibson ES 335 guitar, w/smoke burst finish, Roland Jazz Chorus amp Dennis Chambers - Yellow Gretsch TW kit w/ Remo heads, Zildjian and PAiSTe Cyms (Yes, DC 'was' a PAiSTe man too) The band played 2 sets. Some tunes are Paul Saroka Originals, but most are funk/fusion cover tunes. This is the earliest known Dennis Chambers gig in circulation. Skylab played with several drummers, in fact, I believe there is another drummer and guitarist sitting in on one tune in the second set... Hard to make out their names though. i'm not going to write down the setlist, you may do so on your own. This will give you the effect of hearing the band for the first time, which of course it will be... Unless you were one of the scant few that resided in baltimore in the early 80s and drove out to hear this low-key unannounced band. They never publicized their shows, only rang up musician friends who in turn rang up more musician friends. This was a small, low ceiling, rat and roach infested dive, as so many clubs in Baltimore were back in the day... And it was cold on this night... I was there, you can hear me whoop and holler now and then... THe taper was actually Vince Loving (r.i.p. 1999) - a bass player that came down to capture these sets so he could learn the tunes for future gigs with the band. Vince played with Skylab regularly soon after this gig, and when he did, it was magical, and humorous. Vince played the bass like a standup comedian would if a standup comedian could tell jokes with a bass. That was Vince. His style and his licks had me busting out in jubilation on a regular basis. His musical ideas were brilliant, and his playing was one-of-a-kind. Vince later recorded and toured in 1986-87 with Special EFX, and with Randy Brecker in 1989-90. Vince can be seen in a japanese video of the Randy Brecker Band taped live at Mondo's in NYC in 1989. Wayne Krantz was on the gig as well as Rodney Holmes drums, and David Kikoski on keys. You can see a clip of the Mondo's video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouQjBG13g0s Vince is not on this skylab gig, but he was very much a part of the Skylab experience... If anyone has any Skylab shows with Vince (Not bloody likely), please put them up on Dime. Thanks Enjoy Eeklair (PS: nothing was done as far as EQing this or anything else, just a raw transfer with good azimuth adjustments on each side of the 2 maxell UD XL 90 tapes.) d1t01.flac:4702374e60410a7ee1bb661e9a3f1083 d1t02.flac:f73545973c67d12d1f439c7419d2a934 d1t03.flac:1c7bef0a866a28d270ab6060ef4747b0 d1t04.flac:8bec653c764d730e62397562d18783d3 d1t05.flac:7101761756f7da8ae7f2ae27e5eef207 d1t06.flac:d89217396047624d1f290130013a2a4f d1t07.flac:7d7eac25b80da5ea1131464334a06088 d1t01.flac:81abf912eea51d0012a2848ee4764580 d2t02.flac:2bd566db57368cc54b85e42f8abbcb55 d2t03.flac:193f547ee8a29d1846c5cbf38befa308 d2t04.flac:ba5bd852d5b68d1d8f51655f2609b624 d2t05.flac:bcbb44eb94923dd3af453e45a1a2c47c d2t06.flac:18f6cfb698c388deb6e3159aa0c8886e d2t07.flac:0098dd95067b7231a63850f6e00b1bd6 d2t08.flac:65da05c1752f72a1c77d1e5bb8d8cfbc |
