NOTES:

Brendan Perry (ex-Dead Can Dance) had scheduled four gigs in the UK for the
second stage of his 2010 tour to promote his new album, 'Ark'.

Piano Magic had been offered the support slot and would open for Brendan at
two of the four gigs, Oxford and London.

Sadly, I couldn't make it to Oxford, but I wasn't going to miss the
opportunity to see both Brendan and Piano Magic play on the same bill at a
venue like the Union Chapel, even if it did mean flying to England from
Amsterdam.

When I arrived at the venue, I discovered that there was talk of cancelling
the gig, due to the venue's insistence that the noise level be kept below a
rather subdued 85 dB. This was understandably causing Brendan a great deal of
consternation and he was apparently seriously considering not going ahead with
the show.

Thankfully for all of us, the issue was somehow resolved and the doors opened
a few minutes early to a very eager queueing public.

Piano Magic warmed up the audience in the chilly venue with an enjoyable 30
minute set, drawing from several albums, with a couple of songs from their
latest offering, 'Ovations'. Speculation on Brendan's Web forum that he might
come out to sing one of the two songs from 'Ovations' on which he provided
vocals sadly turned out to be no more than wishful thinking on the part of the
fans.

This was the first time I had seen Piano Magic live. I have several of their
albums and was suitably impressed with their live sound, even though they
had presumably had to make do with quite a short soundcheck as a result of the
deliberations with the venue over the volume.

Piano Magic did, indeed, play rather quietly. It's rare that I have to use the
pre-amp to boost the signal from the microphones, but this was one of those
occasions, even though I was sat directly in front of the PA on the left-hand
side of the hall. Brendan's performance later in the evening would be
considerably louder.

The audience were quiet and appreciative. I think that quite a lot of
Brendan's fans are also Piano Magic fans, especially since 'Ovations'. The
number can only have increased after this performance.

If you're familiar with my recordings, you'll know that I typically release
them with no mastering other than fades at the beginning and end. That's also
the case here: you will hear it exactly the way that I heard it. The sound
quality is excellent, as per my recording of Brendan's set afterwards.

Enjoy!
