Tech Notes Note: this was seeded/released by the taper without any Flac fingerprints or an md5 checksum, but the files check out fine through TLH.

"I recorded this concert from the centre of the front row using a Nagra 4.2 recorder, Beyer M-160 microphone and BASF LH 1/4" reel-to-reel tape (full-width mono) at 3 3/4 ips. The filter switch was set flat and the recording level was set manually with no limiter. I had tentatively set the recording level during the Foghat's opening set but found I had to reduce the level slightly when the full band started playing 'When It Blows Its Stacks'. Other than that I made no adjustments and my recording of the concert is continuous and complete.

In 2004 I copied this across to DAT, connecting my original recorder directly to a Sony PCM-2700 DAT recorder, and then copied the DAT tape to CD-R in real time using a Pioneer PDR-509 audio CD recorder. These CDs have now been converted to FLAC files using Roxio Easy Media Creator (Highest Quality).

There has been no re-equalisation or filtering applied to this recording at any point in the chain, and this is as close to the original first generation tape as is possible within the limitations of the 16-bit 44.1 kHz digital spec for CD.

Sound quality:

The inherent problems with audience recordings were exacerbated in this case by the notoriously poor acoustics of the venue, and by a PA that couldn't cope with the demands of the band, but this recording is considerably better than the earlier upload of this concert; jazzfan has suggested I grade this as 8.5 - 9. This tape is also complete, unlike the earlier offering.

Please do not modify these files or upload to any other tracker. I hope you enjoy them.
