"The Boston Trick Party By the time Genesis performed in Boston on April 10th, 1976, 'A Trick Of The Tail', their first album without Peter Gabriel, had received universal rave reviews. Defying all expectations, the band had successfully survived the loss of their former lead singer and had produced an album of exceptional quality, one which had silenced even the most vocal of their detractors. The overwhelming success of the album, both critically and commercially, must surely have tasted very sweet to Tony, Mike, Steve and Phil, especially as the band had been all but written off when Gabriel’s decision to leave had been announced, but now they were facing their next, and possibly greatest, challenge – to prove that they were still an exciting and entertaining live act. From the outset, Phil was keen not to imitate his predecessor’s on stage approach, adopting instead a simpler, more natural persona. His relaxed, easygoing manner created an instant bond between himself and the audience, while his amazing vocal talent was immediately evident. "I decided to come up front and that left us with the problem of finding someone I respected enough to stand and watch play the drums," remembered Phil. "Bill (Bruford) seemed an obvious choice. We’d already asked an unknown guy, a friend of mine, to do the job but he felt he couldn’t handle it so, having mentioned we needed a drummer in conversation with Bill, he said he’d love to do it." In his recently published autobiography, Bill fondly recalls his short stint with Genesis but still feels to this day that he was not the right kind of drummer for the band. With his playing rooted in jazz rather than rock, Bill's fondness for improvisation made it very hard for him to confine himself to the rigid framework of Genesis music. To most fans, however, his inventiveness gave the music a new dimension and helped to refresh the band’s live sound. As on the previous 'Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' tour, Genesis were scheduled to perform at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. This would be only the ninth date on this new tour but already the band were displaying an admirable self-confidence and mastery of their stagecraft. Although they had been booked to play mainly theatres and relatively small concert halls all over North America, Genesis had begun this tour with an important series of concerts in Canada, playing four sold-out nights in 15,000-seater hockey arenas in Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa and Toronto. Undoubtedly, the resounding success of these shows alleviated no small amount of pressure that the band had been under, so the Boston audience saw a revitalised and buoyant Genesis performing at the top of their game. The set list on the ‘Trick Of The Tail’ tour was quite unique, visiting most eras of the band’s history up to that time. Along with five songs taken from their latest album, Genesis played a choice selection of material from earlier albums, a fine blend of delicate acoustic and powerfully dramatic numbers, including the classic 'Firth Of Fifth' and 'The Cinema Show', the seminal 'Supper's Ready', a short medley of material from ‘The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway’ and, most surprising of all, a rejuvenated 'White Mountain' from the 'Trespass' album. Sadly, 'White Mountain', the lovely 'Entangled' and full versions of both 'Dance On A Volcano' and 'Los Endos' would never grace the Genesis stage again after the 1976 tour. Midway through 1975, Genesis without Peter Gabriel had seemed unthinkable, especially on the live stage where Gabriel had unquestionably dominated proceedings with his charismatic and vivid performances, but the success of the classic 1976 tour swiftly cast off any lingering doubts about the band’s future. Their determination, resourcefulness and sheer musical proficiency had proved decisively that Genesis were now entering a new and challenging phase of their remarkable career and were still a major force to be reckoned with. The Mad Man Notes from the Re-Master Once again, PRRP and the entire progressive rock trading community must thank the Dan Lampinski team for the release of Mr. Lampinski's outstanding master recordings. This PRRP remaster begins with the Lampinski recording of Genesis in Boston during the 1976 tour. As excellent as his recordings have shown themselves to be, this one, like many others was recorded or digitized with a speed error. Comparing the performance to standard studio and live commercial recordings, the speed error for each tape was identified and corrected. The venue and taper location introduced some frequency harmonics and excess that needed correction. After EQ, all instruments could be heard well. Hiss was obvious and therefore a gentle hiss reduction was used to allow better appreciation of the subtle components of the recording. The two channels were balanced, including some repeated drops in signal found in the right channel. Clicks and pops were repaired and missing sections were patched using an alternative source. Many camera clicks were present and heard in the right channel during quiet sections of the recording. These were left unaltered as they are not considered a recording flaw. Dynamics were adjusted to enhance the listening experience and compensate for auto record circuitry likely present in the recorder. The introduction to Entangled was moved to the beginning of disc 2 to be consistent with the show. The whole show was then tracked to complete the process." |
