Initially put off by the name -- I know, I know: don't judge a book by its cover -- I finally got around to playing something by the band a couple of weeks later on Spotify and was immediately intrigued. The timing was good, too, because the band were booked to play the Paradiso's small room in a few weeks. That gave me ample time to assemble their discography and familiarise myself with their body of work. Imagine what you'd get if Sigur Rós merged with For A Minor Reflection and then recruited as the new vocalist the bastard offspring arising from a threesome between Leonard Cohen, The National's Matt Berninger and Piano Magic's Glen Johnson. Bingo, you now have something that approximates I Like Trains. For me, the highlight of their catalogue to date is undoubtedly the 'The Christmas Tree Ship' EP. This instrumental slice of post-rock conjures up images of a melancholy Mogwai and is their most cohesive work to date. I was a little disappointed with the new album, to be honest. Guy Bannister's monotone seemed more grating than usual and none of the songs leapt out of the speakers at me. The studio rendition probably just needs time to grow on me, though, because in a live setting, no such issues were apparent to me. The new songs from 'He Who Saw The Deep' stood proudly next to the old ones and Guy's vocals were perfectly in keeping with the mood. As per usual, the Kleine Zaal's sound was crisp, clear and very, very loud. I Like Trains took full advantage of this and churned out a good seventy minute set, in spite of having travelled from Berlin that day and not having found time to eat anything. Bravo! As usual, I'm releasing this recording free of any additives, colourings and preservatives. This is an organic product, presented to you as it was farmed on the night. The sound is genuinely excellent, the audience appropriately quiet when it mattered. Enjoy!" |
