| Tech Notes | This show was released as "2003-07-20," but my intrepid research finds this show took place on the following day, with another misdated 2003 show--from the Elbow Room--taking place on the 22nd. Just so you're aware! "This was my introduction to SGM. I went to this show on the strength of vaguely remembering hearing something interesting about them a year or two prior, plus their first album was released on Negativland's Seeland label, and Negativland are The Shit, so they had that goin' for 'em. But I'd never heard a note of their music, nor any of their precursors Acid Rain or Idiot Flesh. I gave away Phish tickets for that night (Deer Creek), so this five dollar show cost me close to a hundred. Totally. Worth. It. Knowing what you know now of the power and theatricality of this band (most of them started the show wearing full-headed animal masks; Frank, I swear, wore his through the whole show and must have sweated away five pounds by the end), put yourself in my place as the first notes I hear from them were A Hymn->tDHAoHOtD. Hell, I was a convert by the second verse, but by the time "I am the adversary/And must remain the adversary" and the staccato math of time signatures shifting back and forth made me unsure of my footing, I was in another world. The timbres of the instruments were all wrong, too. Despite the usual slight mid-rangey coloration of the mics I was using for the recording, this un-mastered fileset *feels* exactly right - wiry, taut and detailed. (I may do a 'remaster' of this - I know some judicious EQ can get professional results out of similarly clean recordings made with the same equipment - but wanted to get this copy out in the exact form I've listened to several handfuls of times in the intervening years.) This is the complete show. Now, in 2010, I have no memory of who opened for them - wish I did. If you have any clues, please let me know. I've seen Cheer Accident open for SGM, and Faun Fables, Lord of the Yum-Yum, Dresden Dolls, 2 Foot Yard, Stinking Lizaveta, and at least a couple others, but am at a loss for this first show." |
