Tech Notes This concert is going to be one of the first of many that I'll be uploading on here from my audio cassette collection.
Over this past summer, I dug out my boxes of tapes that have been in storage for the better part of 15 years.
I have 9 other Jorma concerts as well as 12 Hot Tuna concerts to share.
Unfortunately, due to work obligations, it's going to take me a while to get them tracked and converted to flac files.
and make a torrent to upload, but I'll do my best to share some more as soon as possible.
As for this show in particular which is a good one to start it off...
It was one of the first shows that Jorma did solo after Hot Tuna broke up in 1978.
(Happily Jorma and Jack got back together in 1987 and have continued to play music together ever since!!!)
This show was originally billed as a Hot Tuna show, but Jorma did all the Hot Tuna shows by himself just as Jorma Kaukonen.
He played the shows on Ovation acoustic/electric guitars and considering how drunk and/or stoned and as well as bad he must
have felt with the breakup of the band. The shows were amazing. This particular show was at the infamous Suffolk Forum
(aka the Commack Arena) which was a forum hockey rink where the Long Islands Ducks used to play. I wasn't at this
show, but I had seen Hot Tuna there in 1977. Their shows there were notorious for lasting 5 hours and going until
3 to 4 o'clock in the morning! This Jorma show is approximately 3.5 hours long and he played 34 songs that night!
Some technical notes: I used a Nakamichi tape deck to do the analog to digital transfers.
The cassette tapes themselves were either TDK-SA, Maxell XLII or XLIIs or occasionally Fuji tapes.
All the tapes have held up very well over the years, except for the Fuji ones which have a tendency for the
leader to separate from the magnetic tape itself. No big deal cause I was able to open the cassette and crazy glue
the tape together so it could be played. But if I only knew then what I know now about Fuji tapes...oh well!
For this show...It's the first one I've done the tracking and normalizing the volume for using Sound Forge.
I'm a little rusty at it because it's been a while since I've used Sound Forge and/or done any tape transfers.
There are some digital snap, crackles and pops that are audible. And there are some instances where tape flips
and/or cuts in the original tape for station identification made for some sudden cuts or fade out at the beginning or end of a few songs.
But the final product is a very enjoyable listen and the solid quality is a solid A, but do to the digital pops maybe a little bit of an A-.
The music is awesome even if Jorma was bit buzzed on whatever and tends to slur the lyrics.
I hope youse guys enjoy the show and remember...Hot Fucking Tuna!!!
