I went to this show along with the taper. This was the 1st time that I had ever seen the Ramones so I didn't know what to expect. The Syria Mosque Ballroom was a large basement room in the Syria Mosque which was in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, PA. The acoustics of the Ballroom were very different from those of the Mosque proper. Upstairs, the acoustics were perfect ; downstairs, they were anything but. Here is a brief synopsis of the recording, good points and bad... Good points: 1) This is a COMPLETE recording of the show with the exception of the tape swap. They MIGHT have played Pinhead after TYL,TTW which MIGHT have been lost during the tape swap but I don't remember and I don't believe that they did. 2) There is no hiss in this recording and also no distortion. There are no speed problems or other faults to detract from your enjoyment of the show. 3) There's not very much talking around the taper after things get started. There's no whistling or shrieking. Bad points: 1) This is unfortunately one of the worst-sounding recordings that I've uploaded out of about 2 dozen uploads. That said, it's actually pretty listenable. There were 3 problems in the venue that night that cause me to make that initial statement. First, the Ballroom's acoustics were AWFUL. Second, part of the stage collapsed during the performance which didn't help matters. Third, the place was PACKED and the crowd was loud and boisterous, which caused the acoustics to be less than optimal. You'll hear people throwing stuff at a girl to convince her to get off her boyfriend's shoulders so that they could see the band. Other than that, the crowd's not too bad. 2) As far as a description of the recording is concerned, here goes: The drums are very audible as is the bass. The guitar is pretty clear all of the time. Lead vocals are clearly heard but the actual words are sometimes hard to understand. I got several of the song titles from the internet and it was in some cases difficult to match up the printed lyrics with what I heard on the tape. The rapid-fire delivery coupled with the sound quality made for a difficult "matching" experience. Well, that's about all that I can think of to say, so let's wrap this up. Finally, please don't buy, sell or convert this show to mp3 or any other lossy format. Please seed this as long as you can. Please trade this freely as it is uncirculated. This show will be a welcome addition to any Ramones fan's collection as it appears to not be on anybody's list (correct me if I'm wrong). I will post a sample to help some of you decide whether or not to get it. IMHO, this tape is NOT for completists only. It's an historical document of a great performance by the Ramones in an acoustically poor venue. That's about as accurate an assessment of the show as I can give. The setlist should be 100% correct. If it's not, let me know. So, as Mr. Natural is so fond of saying, have fun, don't freak out and enjoy the concert ! Hey ho, let's go....... |
