NOTES:

I had first wanted to see The XX on 10th October 2009 in the Paradiso's Kleine
Zaal, but it was sold out. The funny thing is, I was already in the building,
because Hugh Cornwell had also played in the Kleine Zaal earlier that evening.

I had hoped to hang around and slip quietly in to see The XX, but the staff
had ushered everyone out of the Kleine Zaal after Hugh Cornwell and were
judiciously checking the tickets of everyone who tried to get in afterwards to
see The XX.

No amount of pleading and offering to pay the cover price cut any ice with the
staff, and so it came to pass that The XX became the first gig in 25 years to
which I have failed to gain entrance by showing enough determination. This
time, tenacity wasn't enough. I wasn't the only one, either. There were quite
a few disappointed fans that evening.

Oh well. Tonight was my chance to make up for that, albeit in the Paradiso's
main hall. I prefer the intimacy and acoustics of the Kleine Zaal, but beggars
can't be choosers, as they say.

This gig had also sold out and I arrived after the support band (These New
Puritans) had played, so people had already taken up position and were packed
like sardines into the stuffy venue.

I wormed my way to the front and found a vacant spot four or five metres from
the left speaker stack, a little closer than I would ideally choose for
recording, but not enough to make a big difference. There was so little floor
space that I was lucky to find even that spot.

Anyway, The XX took to the stage just after 21:00 and proceeded to play
through the entirety of their eponymous debut album. The only surprise was a
cover of Kyla's 'Do You Mind?' a few songs in, which I hadn't heard before.

The crowd lapped it up and the band were obviously impressed with the numbers
that had turned up to see them. They commented on this a few times.

The band played until they had no material left, which meant just one single
song encore. It wasn't enough, but what can you do?

All too soon, the lights came up and it was all over in less than an hour.

No mastering has been performed on the recording, so you're hearing it the way
I did. As you've hopefully come to expect from me, the sound quality is very
high and captures the atmosphere and ample reverb used by the band.

Enjoy!
