Your Home I Where You're Happy (Charles Manson) * a capella ** aborted Why see Evan Dando twice in 10 days? Would not have traveled for that, but being in Berlin with nothing better to do why not? And having seen a show when he was "off" there was the hope of a chance to see him "on". And on he was, definately enjoying himself and the show, even saying so on one occasion. Compared to Hamburg much more eye contact with the audience, a couple of comments, even a smile once in a while. And a much longer show ('though he confessed to be tired, and looked it), different as well, "Shame about Ray" got played of course but not right at the beginning. A much longer solo set, with electric guitar this time (which suits him better), with a couple of covers strewn in including a heartrendering version of the great John Prine song "Sam Stone" (there's a hole in daddy's arm where al the money goes...). The Club not sold out but nicely filled with an appreciative audience, very appreciative, quite a few people knowing the songs by heart and singing along during the solo part, Dando sometimes moving away from the mic and letting the audience do the job. At one point, when he was doing "Frank Mills" a capella a girl close to me sang along nearly the whole song, creating on the recording a somewhat shaky duett - these are the moments for which I like audience tapes. There was even a short encore after about 5 minutes of cheering. The house music had long begun, but the lights were still down, so I kind of hoped for an encore and changed the md, resulting in an incomplete recording of the break - mended the gap as seemless as possible. Recorded 7 meters from stage, slightly right of centre, recording levels were right, no clipping, lowered a few volume spikes, raised the overall levels by 1,5 dB, applied some leveller manually to close clapping. For the solo part I had raised the recording levels, so this part is a little louder than it was actually. I left this as it was, but lowered the cheering between the songs a little as long as he didn't start the next song. The recording sounds nice, very little chatter, an enthousiastic shouter to my left (but I didn't grudge him his enthousiasm, he really enjoyed himself). |
