| J-Card Comment | 40:19 min. KOWALSKI, a band from Wuppertal, Germany, which were active between 1980-1993, is another example for the theory that own prophets mean nothing in their homeland, but get at least a bit of success in other countries. While I won't compare this band to the great CAN, the fate is a bit similar. Comprised from musicians of lower successful bands of the lower Rhine area (with a bit of exception for Hans Bäär, who was bassplayer in the mid/late 70's incarnation of Hölderlin), the band tried to stay away from the simple hype of the "Neue Deutsche Welle" (New German Wave), and instead put up some more avantgardistic style. Just imagine Talking Heads rhythms, a bit of Zappa-style-weirdness, some (I know you hate this) stupid boring early 80's machine sound, but a strange hysterical singer. And for those of you, who understand german language - farout lyrics! If you first read the tracktitles, you might be thinking of a political rightwinged band, but listening to the tracks the opposite occurs. This was very much earlier than a band like RAMMSTEIN, whose lyrics were also a bit of controverse for a long time. Anyway, judge for yourself. Enjoy! SB. KOWALSKI were... UWE FELLENSIEK - vocals RUEDIGER ELZE - guitar, electronics, vocals HANS BAEAER - bass, vocals RUEDIGER BRAUNE - drums, electronics |
