J-Card Comment Another previously-uncirculated tape rescued from Andy and Gary’s box-in-the-loft. It’s not brilliant quality, but I’ve heard worse. The cassette has deteriorated a little but the sound is just about alright. I will post a 30-second MP3 sample for you to assess. Also, a scan of the ticket.

The Quartier Latin in (what was then) West Berlin was a funny old place situated on the Potsdamer Strasse, a notorious red light area of the city. It’s probably very trendy and bohemian now but back then, it was a sleazy, dirty and very dark part of the city. The venue reminded me of London’s Roundhouse in the 70’s; a bit grubby and threadbare, with groups of earnest young people sitting around smoking dope and discussing politics before the band came on.

I saw a few bands here and the sound was always a bit boomy. I seem to remember a high ceiling that made the sound bounce around all over the place. That’s my excuse for the sound of the tape anyway. The venue is now a hugely popular upmarket cabaret and variety theatre called the Wintergarten.
