| J-Card Comment | Blur--Palais Royale, Toronto, April 6, 1999 Small, sold out show to showcase their "13" album. I was never a big Blur fan until this point--I had seen them at Edgefest when they were touring for "Parklife", and left halfway through the set. Then the "Blur" album came out, with the perfect, 2 minute pop opus "Song #2", and they got my attention again. That album did really well here in Canada, so there was a big push for the follow up. I remember listening to it the day it came out, and told my manager (I was in music retail at the time), "I'll tell you 2 things about the new Blur album. 1, it's brilliant. 2, it won't sell for shit." I was right, it didn't do as well as the previous, but I still feel it's their best record. The show sold out in 2 minutes. One of the girls I worked with was a big Blur fan, and she begged the record rep for tickets, and he actually came through. She didn't have a car though, so said if I would drive, I could go with her. Done. Teenage girls ruin everything. The place was crawling with them, they were surrounding the tour bus, and after the show they were throwing rocks up to the dressing room windows. The band were rather hesitant to come out, needless to say. The girls also tend to scream a lot during shows. It's annoying. Not the best recording ever, I must say. The crowd was very loud, the sound wasn't the greatest, but they did play the entire album in order, plus a few crowd pleasers as an encore. For big fans only, or folks who were there. |
