Notes:

Herd of Instinct is from the King Crimson school of prog,
by way of Djam Karet. In fact, their albums are released
on Karet's Firepool Records label. The music is a mix
of ambient and electronic, with floating keyboard and
guitar notes mixing with pulsing rhythms and intricate
musical patterns. I think a lot of ProgDay attendees
didn't quite know what to make of this band, since they
just came out, put their heads down and played music for
about an hour and a quarter, only stopping to address the
audience briefly a couple times.

My recording came out pretty well. When I first listened
to it, it sounded really muddy and muffled, so I filtered
out a bit of the low end and boosted the high end, and it
sounded much better. Then I read someone else's review of
this year's ProgDay and they mentioned that Herd of Instinct
sounded really muffled, so my original recording was
probably a better representation of how the set sounded.
But the filtered version sounds a lot better to me - you
can hear guitar and keyboard parts that were almost
completely buried in the muck before, so I stuck with it.

About ProgDay:

ProgDay is an outdoor festival of progressive rock held
annually over Labor Day weekend every year since 1995.
The first year it was only one day (thus the singular "Day"
in the name), but in 1996 it was expanded to two days
and has been featuring eight or more of the best prog
bands from around the world every year since. There's
often a Friday night preshow and/or a Saturday night
show at a nearby nightclub so that a few more prog bands
can be showcased. It's definitely worth the trip if
you're a prog fan and don't mind a little sun and a
little driving around.

The main event takes place at beautiful Storybook Farm,
unless rain forces it indoors (which has fortunately only
happened a couple times in the festival's history). It's
a relaxed atmosphere, where you can listen and watch from
anywhere you want - if you really like a particular band
or want to get a better look at an instrument or performer,
you can go sit right in front of the stage or stand along
the side of the stage. Some people listen to the bands
while shopping for CDs and merchandise in the vendor tent
or getting food in the pavilion or playing games in the
field behind the audience.

The atmosphere is relaxed, the people are friendly, and
the band members often hang out all weekend taking in the
show, selling merchandise and chatting with fans when
they're not on stage. If you're a prog rock fan and can
possibly attend, make every effort to be there next year.
The festival runs on a very tight budget, so every ticket
sold really helps.
