| J-Card Comment | Geetarz Comments: The latter half of the 1990s was a time of change and growth for Eric Clapton. The early part of the decade saw massive commercial success, and swings from "Rock God", to the massive success of "Unplugged", and a couple years of "All Blues" performances. 1996 was a year of transition, and 1997 found EC going in different directions as well. EC's summer tour with the "Jazz Legends" was a real milestone in his career, in many ways the first time he had worked with a band of peers since Derek and the Dominos. Playing with some of the finest improvisational musicians on the planet certainly pushed EC in new directions, and fresh on the heels of that tour, EC set off for a short tour of Japan in the fall of that year. As usual, EC's Japan appearances featured some of his finest playing, and the sets were invigorating and new, incorporating material written for the "Pilgrim" album that would see release the following spring. Bolstered by Legends bandmates Steve Gadd on drums and the incredible Joe Sample on keyboards, as well as a cast of regulars, this band took material new and old in different directions. Overall, this is absolutely essential EC, and I'd rate this video as a keystone of any EC collection. I'm not sure how widely circulated this version is; I received in trade circa 2001 from a trading buddy in Japan. Lineage: Satellite > Super VHS > DVD-R > You ! Quality is excellent, and the playing is stellar ... enjoy! ~Geetarz and Cody the Codependent Husky, December 25, 2009 www.geetarz.org |
