"I have seen the future of jazz/metal fusion and its name is MORGLBL !" - jojogunne 8/25/2011 Finally, legitimate concerts come to Florence, SC in the guise of three European bands: Morglbl, Panzerballett and Freak Kitchen. The bands are respectively from France, Germany and Sweden and they ripped the faces off all who saw them. Each band contains an incredible guitar wizard (Panzerballett has two) and I saw visions of musical integrity and prowess for $7 US (< 5 Euros). The first band, a French trio called Morglbl, is well-known in France & Europe but virtually unknown here in the US. I believe that's about to change....Christophe Godin is an amazing guitarist who is one-third John McLaughlin, one-third Steve Morse and one-third Steve Vai. He delivers lightning-fast complex solos effortlessly and he's funny as hell too. You gotta be there to believe him. Ivan Rougny is a master of the bass and light-years beyond Geddy Lee IMHO. Aurelien Ouzoulias rounds out the trio as an excellent drummer and together these guys are one of the tightest bands I've ever seen. I saw them at The Fountainhead, which is a new bar in the downtown area and a fledgling musical venue for local bands & national (international !) acts. The audience was small but mighty and the band played their asses off for them. Herewith, several random observations about the band, the venue and the evening... This was the 1st show of the tour and about the 4th time that the band had played in the US, I think. I had a hard time understanding some of Monsieur Godin's stage banter because Morglbl (basically pronounced MOR'- guhl-bull) is an instrumental band and the mics were not turned up very loudly. Christoph's English is very good. You'll have no trouble hearing the music but you WILL have to turn the volume WAY up to understand the between-song stage banter. Track 2 was played again at the end of the show for a guy who came a little late and wanted to hear the song in its entirety. I could not understand the name of the final track but it sounded like "Totale Cote d'Verde". If you know, let me know. Many of these songs will be out on a CD to be released in January 2012 so we'll know the name of that song then, I guess. It was the 1st time out live for several of these tunes so that should be a treat for those of you who grab this. Morglbl reminds me a LOT of Mahavishnu Orchestra and I believe that Godin is just as good as McLaughlin. If you love MO and/or melodic instrumental heavy metal, you'll LOVE this stuff. J'aime beaucoup s'il vous plait... Highlights of the evening included watching a cockroach crawl across the floor during the performance only to vanish somewhere close to the stage and getting harassed by some homeless clown for a ride and/or money at 11:30 PM outside the venue. He got neither from me. (The venue was very clean and enjoyable ; cockroaches are a way of life in SC). The recording is very clear and has no hiss, distortion or speed problems ; you will enjoy it immensely if you grab it. Give this band a chance. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised... Finally, it's time to get this show on the shining path to spiritual enlightenment sooooooooooo no buy, no sell, no mp3. Please seed this as long as you can. This is a very high-energy show in which everybody shines. I will post samples shortly for those of you still undecided, but I think you'll find that this is a very fine-sounding recording and a great addition to any Morglbl fan's collection. Well, thanks for reading this and Mr. Natural would like to add these few comments: have fun, it's OK to be a bloody American and by all means, enjoy the concert!!! Vive la France !!! Vive Morglbl !!! We are bloody French !!! jojogunne 9/7/2011 |
