Notes:

Take one of the dirtiest knock–down, drag–out Presidential elections ever, let Dave rip into that with his incisive personal take, and the results are guaranteed to be a riot. Whether that's riotous comedy or explosively offensive will depend on how tough or politically correct your skin is.

Chappelle's played a few New York City gigs this year -- a series of shows back in August at the Cutting Room, then a quickly sold out week of shows in late October that were announced from a few days to a few hours prior to showtime. This consisted of three warm-up nights at the Cutting Room (Sunday through Tuesday) leading up to a Wednesday night gig at the Gramercy Theater. He then tacked on a last-minute show at the Cutting Room for that Thursday night.

Leading up to this coming Saturday's November 12th appearance as the host of "Saturday Night Live," Chappelle threw in yet another last-minute surprise show at the Cutting Room on Friday, November 4th. The Friday night show was reviewed in The Observer, under the headline: "Dave Chappelle Defends Trump, Rips Clinton: 'She's Not Right and We All Know It." Jared Kushner, the publisher of Observer Media, is none other than Presidential nominee Donald Trump's son-in-law, so it's no wonder that the article put a pro-Trump spin on Chappelle's stand-up act.

It's interesting to see how other news outlets then copied the Observer article and put out minor variations of the same report. A few hours later, it was reported on TMZ that Chappelle was upset the Observer practiced such shoddy journalism to make it seem as if he was a Trump supporter, when he was equally critical of both candidates (although he already cast an early vote for Hillary Clinton).

According to TMZ, the Observer reporter supposedly managed to get a recorder in to document the show, based on what appears to be transcriptions of the Friday night show. Would it be possible that the reporter simply jotted down selective quotes during the show, without the aid of a recorder, and perhaps that would explain how the reporting is so devoid of context?

No cell phones are allowed at Chappelle's shows unless they are turned off and locked into sealed magnetic pouches, and everyone is subject to a pat down and search prior to entering the venue. This may be to Chappelle's detriment, since there's no alternate recording put on to YouTube for posterity to corroborate or contradict the Observer's reporting of the gig. The election for the next U.S. President is now less than 24 hours away. The next broad public opportunity Chappelle has to set the record straight will be on SNL, four days after Election Day.

That leads us to the prior week's Thursday show. Although this is not the Friday show reviewed in the Observer, it in all likelihood wouldn't be vastly different. Now you can have a listen for yourself and decide whether Chappelle is pro-Trump or pro-Hillary, or doesn't care, and whether his act was trumped up as a pawn in the election mayhem. If you feel strongly about either candidate, there's probably nothing here that will change your mind.

At the time of this show, Pussygate as Chappelle likes to label the leak of the Trump "Access Hollywood" tape, was the last big bombshell of the election. The day after this show, on October 28th, FBI Director James Comey mentioned in a letter to Congress that the agency learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation of Secretary Clinton's email server. As of a few hours ago, the agency stated it reviewed all the emails and that their conclusion in July not to prosecute Clinton after the FBI’s original investigation still stands. Who knows what other new twists and turns will happen within the hours leading up to the election.

If you're not familiar with Chappelle's act, or have never seen him in a nightclub, this is your chance to hear him at one of his favorite venues, performing in his trademark laid-back but very blue manner, with plenty of audience interaction. Somewhere in his lewd introspection are shades of the politically sharp jabs of Dick Gregory, the philosophical empathy of Richard Pryor, but it's his own originality that ensures his spot among the greats. Here's hoping he secretly recorded every one of his own shows. Until then, this will have to do.

Sometimes you have to turn to the news for comedy, and to comedy for the news.

Enjoy,
